Chapter 2

Valentin Torres kept the revolver pressed against Amelia’s temple.
Dominic stood twelve feet away, outwardly calm.
Inside, something savage had awakened.
“Move again,” Valentin warned, “and the pregnant woman dies.”
Amelia’s eyes found Dominic’s.
She looked terrified.
But beneath the fear was something worse.
Hurt.
Eight months earlier, Dominic had protected her through twelve hours of darkness, then vanished before she could even learn who he truly was.
Now he was standing in front of her again.
And he was pretending she was a stranger.
Valentin noticed Dominic staring.
His eyes narrowed.
“Why are you looking at her like that?”
Dominic forced every trace of recognition from his face.
“I’ve never seen that woman in my life.”
Amelia’s expression broke.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Dominic felt it like a knife.
But he could not take back the lie.
Not yet.
If Valentin understood that Amelia carried Dominic Castellano’s child, the entire situation would change.
She would stop
being an anonymous hostage.
She would become leverage.
Valentin dragged Amelia closer.
Her bound hands instinctively covered her stomach.
Dominic watched every movement.
Every angle.
Every weapon.
Two men guarded the entrance.
Another stood near the vault corridor.
Valentin held Amelia.
Dominic had been disarmed.
There was no safe shot.
No obvious escape.
Then Valentin smiled.
“You came here for Box 404,” he said. “Let’s finish this.”
“You cannot open it.”
“I know.”
Valentin tapped the revolver against Amelia’s temple.
“That is why I have you.”
Dominic said nothing.
“The box requires your fingerprint and retinal scan.”
Valentin gestured toward the vault.
“You open it. I send everything inside to the press. Your accounts. Your politicians. Your judges. Every person who ever took money from Castellano.”
Dominic’s expression remained flat.
“You think destroying me makes you powerful?”
“No.”
Valentin’s smile widened.
“It makes me satisfied.”
Amelia shifted slightly.
Valentin immediately
jerked her hair.
She gasped.
That was enough.
The controlled businessman disappeared.
Dominic moved.
His elbow slammed into the throat of the nearest gunman.
The man collapsed before anyone understood what had happened.
Dominic caught the falling MP5.
The second gunman raised his weapon.
Dominic fired first.
The lobby erupted.
Gunfire shattered marble.
Hostages screamed and dropped flat against the floor.
Dominic fired toward the man guarding the vault corridor, forcing him behind cover.
“Amelia stay down”
She froze.
The sound of Dominic saying her name changed everything.
Valentin heard it too.
His face transformed.
He looked at Amelia.
Then at Dominic.
Then slowly back at Amelia’s pregnant stomach.
Understanding spread across his face.
“No,” Dominic said quietly.
Valentin laughed.
It was not amusement.
It was discovery.
“Oh my God.”
He grabbed Amelia by the collar and dragged her upright.
Amelia cried out as her bound hands covered her abdomen.
Valentin moved behind her, using her body as a shield.
Then he lowered the revolver.
Not toward her head.
Toward her stomach.
The entire lobby seemed to stop.
Valentin looked at Dominic.
“This isn’t just some hostage.”
Dominic’s grip tightened around the MP5.
Valentin smiled.
“She belongs to you.”
Dominic said nothing.
Valentin looked at Amelia.
“How far along are you?”
Amelia refused to answer.
He pushed the barrel closer to her belly.
“Eight months?” he asked.
Dominic’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But Valentin saw it.
His smile became monstrous.
“Your child.”
Amelia closed her eyes.
Dominic’s entire empire suddenly became meaningless.
The offshore accounts.
The political protection.
The billions.
The syndicate.
None of it mattered.
Valentin had the mother of his child in front of him.
And one nervous movement could kill them both.
“Lower the weapon, Castellano.”
Dominic did not move.
“Now.”
Slowly, Dominic lowered the MP5.
Amelia stared at him.
“No,” she whispered.
Dominic looked directly at her.
The silent message was clear.
Trust me.
Valentin laughed.
“The great Dominic Castellano.”
Dominic placed the weapon on the marble floor.
“A man who made half this city kneel.”
He kicked the MP5 away.
“Brought to his knees by a florist.”
Dominic raised both hands.
For the first time anyone in New York’s underworld could remember, Dominic Castellano surrendered.
Valentin’s attention remained completely fixed on him.
That was his mistake.
One of the hostages behind him lifted his head.
The young delivery worker had stopped crying.
The plastic restraint around his wrists lay cut beside him.
His name was Lorenzo.
He was one of Dominic’s most trusted enforcers.
Weeks earlier, Dominic had secretly placed him inside the depository because Box 404 had become too dangerous to leave unguarded.
Lorenzo reached beneath his delivery jacket.
He pulled out a suppressed pistol.
Two shots cracked through the lobby.
Valentin screamed.
One bullet struck his shoulder.
The other destroyed his knee.
He released Amelia.
Dominic moved before Valentin hit the floor.
He crossed the distance and wrapped both arms around Amelia.
“Dominic—”
A gunshot exploded behind them.
Dominic turned his body.
The bullet tore across his ribs instead of striking Amelia.
He stumbled.
Blood immediately spread across his white shirt.
Amelia screamed his name.
Dominic barely looked at the wound.
“Are you hit?”
“No.”
“The baby?”
“I don’t know.”
He lifted her into his arms.
Behind them, Lorenzo exchanged fire with the final Torres gunman.
Dominic carried Amelia into the reinforced vault corridor.
Lorenzo followed seconds later, dragging the wounded Valentin with him.
The massive vault door closed.
Steel locks engaged.
For the first time since the attack began, silence surrounded them.
Amelia sat trembling on a stack of safety-deposit containers.
She moved both hands over her stomach.
Dominic watched.
Then the baby kicked.
Amelia released a broken breath.
“He’s okay.”
Dominic stopped.
“He?”
Amelia looked at him.
For eight months, she had carried a secret alone.
Now there was nowhere left to hide it.
Dominic approached slowly.
Blood continued dripping from his side.
“You knew?”
Amelia’s eyes filled.
“Of course I knew.”
“You knew he was mine.”
“Yes.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
Amelia laughed through her tears.
“Come to you?”
She pointed toward the steel vault.
“This is exactly why.”
Dominic said nothing.
“I tried to find you after the Waldorf,” she continued. “I thought you were some businessman who saved me.”
Her voice shook.
“Then I learned your name.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“I learned what people say about Dominic Castellano.”
“People say many things.”
“They say you make people disappear.”
He did not deny it.
“They say your company is only the clean part of something much darker.”
Still nothing.
Amelia’s hands covered her stomach.
“When I found out I was pregnant, all I could think about was what would happen if you knew.”
Dominic moved closer.
“You believed I would hurt my own child?”
“I believed you might take him.”
That stopped him.
Amelia wiped at her tears.
“You left me two hundred thousand dollars and a note telling me to disappear.”
Her voice cracked.
“So I disappeared.”
Dominic looked down.
For perhaps the first time in his adult life, he had no immediate answer.
“I changed my name. I moved to Queens. I built a life where no one knew me.”
“And today?”
“I came here for my mother’s safety-deposit box.”
She gave a disbelieving laugh.
“I didn’t even know this place had anything to do with you.”
Dominic looked at her stomach.
“So fate brought you into my vault.”
“Your war brought me into your vault.”
He accepted the accusation without argument.
Then he knelt.
Amelia stiffened.
Dominic slowly lifted one hand.
He stopped before touching her.
“May I?”
Amelia stared at him.
The ruthless man feared by thousands was asking permission.
After a long moment, she nodded.
Dominic placed his palm against her stomach.
Nothing happened.
Then the baby kicked.
Dominic froze.
His expression changed completely.
Amelia watched the realization move through him.
This was real.
Not an heir.
Not a bloodline.
Not an extension of an empire.
A child.
His child.
Dominic looked up at Amelia.
“You should never have had to be afraid of me.”
“But I was.”
“You won’t be again.”
Amelia shook her head.
“You can’t promise that.”
“I can.”
“How?”
Dominic’s eyes became cold again, but not toward her.
“Because everyone who threatens you will lose the ability to do it twice.”
A metallic sound suddenly came from beneath the vault floor.
Amelia looked down.
“What is that?”
Dominic stood.
Lorenzo touched his earpiece.
“Matteo’s here.”
Sparks appeared around a section of the floor.
Someone was cutting upward through the steel from below.
Amelia stared at Dominic.
“What did you do?”
“I prepared an exit.”
“For yourself?”
Dominic looked at her.
“For us.”
The steel section crashed downward.
A dark tunnel opened beneath the vault.
Armed men waited below.
Dominic extended his hand toward Amelia.
Taking it meant more than escaping the bank.
It meant stepping directly into the world she had spent eight months trying to avoid.
Amelia looked at his blood-covered hand.
Then at the man behind it.
Dominic said nothing.
He simply waited.
