Dominic Castellano had built his life around one rule: never give another person enough power to destroy you.
Chapter 1
Dominic Castellano had built his life around one rule: never give another person enough power to destroy you.
To Wall Street, he was the untouchable CEO of Castellano Global Logistics, a shipping empire worth more than twelve billion dollars.
To the men who controlled New York’s shadows, he was something else entirely.
A king.
Dominic bought loyalty, punished betrayal, and trusted no one. Love was a weakness he had removed from his life years ago.
At least, that was what he told himself.
Eight months earlier, during a charity gala at the Waldorf Astoria, rival gunmen had stormed the ballroom.
Among the screaming guests was Amelia Kim, a twenty-nine-year-old florist from Brooklyn who had only been hired to arrange orchids.
Dominic had seen a gunman aim at her.
Without thinking, he dragged her behind a marble pillar, killed the attacker, and pulled Amelia into an underground panic room.
They spent twelve hours trapped in darkness.
Amelia trembled against the steel wall while Dominic, a man who had made
thousands fear him, tried to calm one terrified woman.
Something happened between them that neither had planned.
Something desperate.
Something intimate.
When the hotel was secure, Dominic disappeared before sunrise.
He left Amelia a duffel bag containing two hundred thousand dollars and a note.
Forget this night.
Disappear.
Dominic convinced himself that sending her away was the safest thing he could do.
For eight months, he heard nothing from her.
Then his encrypted phone rang.
His rival, Valentin Torres, had attacked the First Manhattan Private Depository.
Nine civilians were being held hostage.
More importantly, Valentin wanted Box 404—a safety-deposit box containing financial records capable of destroying Dominic’s entire organization.
Valentin demanded that Dominic enter alone.
So Dominic did.
He stepped through the shattered doors while armed men trained submachine guns on his chest.
Valentin smiled when Dominic was searched and disarmed.
“You are already dead,” Dominic told him calmly.
Valentin
laughed.
“I don’t need to survive. I only need to destroy you.”
Dominic barely reacted.
Then Valentin moved aside.
And Dominic saw the hostages.
An elderly man.
A frightened bank employee.
A delivery worker.
Several civilians pressed together beside the teller windows.
Then he saw her.
Amelia.
She sat on the marble floor with her wrists tied in front of her.
Her beige coat was dirty.
Tears streaked her face.
But that was not what made Dominic stop breathing.
Her coat had fallen open.
Beneath it was the unmistakable curve of an advanced pregnancy.
Seven months.
Maybe eight.
Dominic’s mind calculated automatically.
Eight months since the Waldorf.
Eight months since the darkness.
Eight months since he had disappeared from her life.
His child.
Amelia was carrying his child.
For one dangerous second, the most controlled man in New York forgot how to hide what he felt.
Amelia lifted her eyes.
Recognition filled them.
She opened her mouth.
Dominic gave the smallest shake of his head.
Do not speak.
If Valentin realized who she was, Amelia would become more valuable than every dollar Dominic possessed.
Valentin suddenly turned toward her.
“I said no noise.”
He grabbed Amelia by the hair.
She cried out as he pulled her head backward.
Dominic’s hands curled at his sides.
Valentin raised his revolver.
Then he pressed the barrel against Amelia’s temple.
Dominic stared at the woman he had abandoned.
At the child he had never known existed.
And understood that for the first time in his life, someone had finally found the one thing he could not afford to lose.
