THE MAFIA BOSS CAME TO RESCUE A HOSTAGE—THEN HE SAW THE SECRET SHE HAD HIDDEN FOR EIGHT MONTHS
Chapter 3 / 3

Chapter 3

PART 3 — SHE ENTERED HIS WORLD TO SAVE THEIR SON BUT NEVER EXPECTED WHAT THE MAFIA KING WOULD SACRIFICE NEXT

1,632 words

Amelia stared at Dominic’s hand.

Above them, federal tactical teams were attempting to breach the vault.

Below them waited an underground tunnel filled with Dominic’s armed men.

There was no normal door left.

No safe choice.

Eight months earlier, Amelia had escaped Dominic’s world before she even understood it existed.

Now she carried his child.

And the man she had feared was standing wounded in front of her after taking a bullet meant for them.

“Amelia.”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

“We have to move.”

She placed her hand in his.

Dominic immediately wrapped one arm around her waist.

He helped her through the opening beneath the vault while Lorenzo remained behind.

“What about Valentin?” Amelia asked.

Dominic looked back at his wounded enemy.

Valentin was pale, bleeding, and barely conscious.

“Leave him.”

Lorenzo raised an eyebrow.

Dominic’s old reputation suggested Valentin would never survive the night.

But Dominic had already made another decision.

“The federal

authorities can keep him.”

“You’re letting him live?” Lorenzo asked.

Dominic looked toward Amelia.

“He’ll spend the rest of his life knowing he discovered my family and still failed to touch them.”

That was punishment enough.

Minutes later, Amelia sat inside an armored SUV moving through a maintenance tunnel beneath Manhattan.

Dominic sat beside her.

Blood had soaked through his shirt.

“You need a hospital.”

“I have doctors waiting.”

“You were shot.”

“It grazed me.”

“You are bleeding through your jacket.”

Dominic looked down as though noticing it for the first time.

Amelia almost laughed.

Almost.

Then the baby moved.

Her hand immediately went to her stomach.

Dominic noticed.

“Is he all right?”

“Yes.”

He placed his hand over hers.

This time Amelia did not pull away.

The convoy emerged far from the police perimeter and traveled east.

By midnight, Amelia was inside a private medical facility hidden within Dominic’s

Long Island estate.

Doctors examined her first.

Dominic insisted.

Only after they confirmed the baby was unharmed did he allow anyone to stitch the wound along his ribs.

Amelia stood in the doorway while a surgeon worked.

“You’re staring,” Dominic said.

“I’m trying to understand you.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“You walked into a hostage situation for a financial ledger.”

“Yes.”

“And then gave up everything the moment Valentin threatened my baby.”

“Our baby.”

Amelia folded her arms.

“You don’t get to correct me after disappearing for eight months.”

Dominic’s expression tightened.

“No.”

It was the first time she had heard him accept criticism without defending himself.

“No,” he repeated. “I don’t.”

The surgeon finished.

Dominic dismissed everyone from the room.

When they were alone, he looked at Amelia.

“I believed leaving you was protection.”

“It wasn’t.”

“I know that now.”

“You left money.”

“I did.”

“As if money could explain

what happened.”

“It couldn’t.”

“As if I could simply forget you.”

Dominic looked away for one brief second.

“I couldn’t forget you either.”

The admission landed harder than Amelia expected.

She sat across from him.

“Then why didn’t you find me?”

“Because everyone close to me eventually becomes a target.”

“That happened anyway.”

“Yes.”

His voice was colder now.

“At the depository, I understood something I should have understood at the Waldorf.”

“What?”

“Distance did not make you safe.”

Dominic stood carefully.

“It only made you unprotected.”

Amelia shook her head.

“I don’t want to live surrounded by guns.”

“You won’t.”

“You’re a mafia boss, Dominic.”

“I know what I am.”

“My son deserves better than growing up inside a war.”

At those words, Dominic became very still.

Then he asked, “What would better look like?”

Amelia had not expected the question.

“A home.”

“You’ll have one.”

“Not a fortress.”

He almost smiled.

“That may be negotiable.”

“School someday.”

“Obviously.”

“Friends who aren’t bodyguards.”

Dominic’s mouth tightened.

“Difficult but possible.”

Amelia stared at him.

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

She stood.

“And no criminal empire waiting for him when he turns eighteen.”

That wiped away every trace of humor.

Dominic looked toward the window.

For generations, the Castellano organization had been passed from father to son.

Power was inheritance.

Violence was tradition.

Dominic had always assumed the next Castellano would inherit everything.

Then he had felt his unborn son kick beneath his palm.

For the first time, inheritance looked less like a gift and more like a sentence.

“What if I change it?” Dominic asked.

Amelia frowned.

“Change what?”

“Everything.”

“You can’t just decide not to be who you are.”

“No.”

Dominic faced her.

“But I can decide what my son inherits.”

Over the following months, Amelia learned what Dominic meant.

He did not become gentle.

He did not become harmless.

He did not suddenly regret every ruthless choice that had built his empire.

Instead, he redirected that ruthlessness.

The Torres organization disappeared first.

Its remaining leadership was dismantled.

Some men were arrested.

Others fled.

Several criminal partnerships simply stopped operating after Dominic made it clear there would be no future war involving his family.

Then came Castellano Global Logistics.

For years, legitimate shipping had existed beside darker operations.

Dominic began cutting those operations away.

Illegal routes were shut down.

Offshore accounts were restructured.

Money that could not survive financial scrutiny vanished from corporate control.

Political relationships tied to bribery were terminated.

Men who had believed Dominic would never abandon the old system discovered that fatherhood had created something more dangerous than ambition.

Purpose.

Amelia watched from a distance at first.

She remained at the estate because Dominic’s enemies still existed, but she refused to become a prisoner.

She chose her own doctor.

She spoke to her friends.

She returned calls.

She walked the beach whenever she wished.

Dominic placed guards nearby.

Amelia complained.

Dominic reduced the visible guards.

Then secretly doubled the invisible ones.

She found out.

They fought about it for three days.

It was the first strangely normal argument either of them had experienced together.

Then, one stormy evening, Amelia went into labor.

Dominic was in Manhattan when the call came.

His driver later claimed he had never seen another human being make the seventy-mile journey faster without personally driving.

Dominic reached the estate medical wing twenty minutes before the birth.

He entered the room without a jacket or tie.

Amelia was gripping the edge of the bed.

“You’re late,” she snapped.

“I’m here.”

“If you tell me to breathe, I’ll kill you.”

Dominic immediately closed his mouth.

Hours later, a newborn cry filled the room.

The nurse placed the baby into Amelia’s arms.

Dominic stood beside the bed.

Silent.

For once, silence had nothing to do with control.

Amelia looked down at their son.

“He has your hair.”

Dominic stared.

“He’s very small.”

“He’s a newborn.”

“He should have more security.”

Amelia laughed despite herself.

The nurse eventually placed the baby into Dominic’s arms.

He held him with obvious terror.

The man who could negotiate with killers without blinking looked down at six pounds of sleeping infant and appeared completely defeated.

“What are we calling him?” Dominic asked.

“Leo.”

Dominic repeated the name quietly.

“Leo Castellano.”

Amelia looked at him.

“Only if Castellano means something different by the time he grows up.”

Dominic met her eyes.

“It will.”

Six months later, autumn sunlight covered the private beach behind the Castellano estate.

Dominic stood on the broad balcony holding Leo against his chest.

The baby slept beneath a soft blanket.

Amelia stepped outside wearing a cashmere shawl.

She moved beside them.

Dominic adjusted the blanket around Leo with absurd precision.

Amelia smiled.

“He’s asleep.”

“For now.”

“You sound suspicious of your own son.”

“He refuses schedules.”

“He’s six months old.”

“He is still a Castellano.”

Amelia rested her head against Dominic’s shoulder.

The sea stretched peacefully beyond the property.

There were guards at the edge of the estate.

There were still enemies who remembered the old Dominic.

There were still parts of him that Amelia knew would never become ordinary.

But things had changed.

Castellano Global Logistics was now operating as a legitimate international corporation.

The darkest businesses beneath it had been dismantled or abandoned.

Dominic still commanded loyalty.

He still inspired fear.

But Leo would never be trained to inherit a criminal war.

Amelia had never asked Dominic to become a saint.

She had asked him to become a father.

And somehow, that request had changed an empire.

Dominic looked down at Leo.

Eight months before the depository, he had abandoned Amelia because he believed disappearing from her life would keep her safe.

Then he found her tied to a marble floor while carrying a child he never knew existed.

He had entered that building prepared to protect a box containing billions.

He left understanding that everything inside it was worthless compared to the woman and child beside him.

“I used to think power meant controlling everything,” Dominic said.

Amelia looked up.

“And now?”

Dominic watched Leo sleep.

“Now I think it means knowing what is worth giving up control for.”

Amelia smiled.

“That almost sounded wise.”

“Don’t repeat it.”

“Your reputation?”

“Exactly.”

Leo stirred.

Dominic immediately looked down.

The baby opened his dark eyes for a second, then settled again.

Amelia watched Dominic’s expression soften.

No one in New York’s underworld would ever believe the sight.

The ruthless king who once trusted no one now stood holding the two people capable of destroying every defense he had ever built.

And he no longer considered that weakness.

Dominic kissed Amelia’s forehead.

Then he tightened one arm around her while their son slept safely between them.

He had once left Amelia alone in darkness because he thought love created vulnerability.

He finally understood the truth.

The woman he had tried to forget had not made him weaker.

She had given him something his billions, weapons, vaults, and armies never could.

A reason to become someone his son would not have to fear.
