Part 2 — When I Finally Saw the Truth
I stood at the sink.
Hot water.
Grease.
Wine glasses.
And listened.
Blake telling stories.
Versions of himself.
Funny Blake.
Adventurous Blake.
Not the Blake who forgot school forms and asked me if electricity bills auto-paid themselves.
Then I heard it.
Vanessa asking softly—
“So are you happy?”
Quiet.
Then Blake laughed.
Long enough to answer.
He said—
“Marriage changes things.”
Not yes.
Not no.
Just—
Marriage changes things.
I dried my hands.
Walked into the dining room.
Picked up my plate.
Looked at him.
And suddenly—
I saw it.
Not betrayal.
Worse.
Comfort.
Comfort that I would stay.
Comfort that I would absorb humiliation because I always had.
Comfort that dinner would end and I would clean and tomorrow I would pack lunches and Monday I would pay bills.
Comfort that my life would continue orbiting his moods.
Something finished breaking.
Vanessa left at 9:12.
She hugged me.
Actually hugged me.
And whispered—
“You
seem really nice.”
Not cruel.
Almost apologetic.
Then she left.
Blake locked the door.
Looked around.
“See? That wasn’t hard.”
I stared.
He loosened his shirt.
“You acted weird.”
I blinked.
“Weird?”
He shrugged.
“You could’ve made more effort.”
I looked at him.
And asked—
“Did you enjoy yourself?”
He rolled his eyes.
“Don’t do this.”
I nodded.
Went to the sink.
Finished washing.
He went upstairs.
At 10:41 he yelled—
“Nora?”
No answer.
“Nora?”
Still nothing.
He came downstairs.
Found me at the kitchen island.
Wedding ring in my hand.
He frowned.
“What are you doing?”
I looked at the dishes.
Still wet.
Set the ring down beside the dirty plates.
And asked—
“Do you know Ethan’s teacher’s name?”
He stared.
“What?”
I waited.
Nothing.
I asked—
“What size shoes does your son wear?”
Pause.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
I nodded.
“What’s our mortgage payment?”
His face changed.
“Nora—”
I looked at him.
Very calmly.
“When’s the last time you packed his lunch?”
Silence.
Then—
“Oh my God. Don’t start.”
I smiled.
Small.
Tired.
“No.”
I placed the ring beside the plate.
“I finished.”
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
“You’re dramatic.”
I nodded.
Maybe.
