Part 3 — The Morning His Card Declined
Then I picked up my phone.
My keys.
My purse.
And said—
“Goodnight, Blake.”
He stared.
“You’re leaving?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
Then I looked at the ring.
“I already left.”
I went upstairs.
Packed one suitcase.
Packed Ethan’s.
Tucked his stuffed dinosaur under his arm.
Carried him sleeping to the car.
Blake never followed.
Because people who think you’ll never leave don’t rush.
They wait for the scene to end.
At 7:16 the next morning—
my phone rang.
Blake.
Ignored.
Again.
Ignored.
Then a text.
WHERE ARE YOU
Then—
MY CARD GOT DECLINED
Then—
CALL ME
Then—
WHAT DID YOU DO
I stared at the screen.
Smiled.
Opened the banking app.
Three months earlier, my attorney had told me something important.
Joint accounts weren’t ownership.
They were access.
Yesterday—
I had removed my direct deposits.
Separated payroll.
Transferred authorized expenses.
Cancelled automatic coverage for his discretionary account.
This morning—
for the first time in
ten years—
Blake Donovan had tried to buy coffee with money he didn’t earn.
And discovered the account attached to his life…
was gone.
THE END.
