Part 1 — Dinner With His Ex

Blake Donovan invited his ex-girlfriend to dinner on a Thursday night and made me roast the chicken.

That was not how he phrased it, of course. Men like Blake never demanded things plainly when they could wrap cruelty in charm. Three days earlier, he had leaned against the kitchen island in our house in Maple Ridge, Pennsylvania, scrolling through his phone while I packed Ethan’s kindergarten lunch.

“Vanessa’s going to be in town,” he said. “I told her she could stop by. You remember Vanessa.”

I remembered Vanessa Cole the way a woman remembers a song that played during a car crash. She had dated Blake before me, back when he owned nothing but a gym membership, a motorcycle he could not afford, and the kind of smile that made lonely women believe they had been chosen by destiny. She was all angles and confidence, a wellness influencer with white teeth and a laugh that made every room tilt toward her.

“She can stop by,” I said,

because I had spent ten years teaching myself that being calm was the same thing as being safe.

“Don’t be weird about it, Nora.” Blake looked up from his phone. “She’s an old friend. She just got back from Scottsdale. Big brand partnership. You could learn a thing or two from her.”

I should have heard the warning in that sentence. Instead, I asked what he wanted for dinner.

By Thursday, I had worked nine hours at the accounting firm where I was a senior finance director, picked Ethan up from aftercare, stopped for groceries, answered two urgent client emails from the parking lot, and come home to find Blake standing in front of the mirror in the guest bathroom, trimming his beard as if he were preparing for a magazine shoot. He had not set the table. He had not bathed Ethan. He had not even taken the chicken

out of the refrigerator.

But the second Vanessa arrived, carrying a bottle of wine that looked expensive and probably was not, Blake transformed. His shoulders squared. His voice deepened. His hand landed lightly on the small of my back in that performative way he used when an audience was present, as if he were presenting a possession he was not proud of but still owned.

“Look at you,” he told Vanessa. “Arizona treated you right.”

Vanessa laughed and touched his arm.

“You look good too.”

Blake smiled in a way I had not seen directed at me in years.

Not because marriage kills romance.

Because attention had become something he performed outward and rationed inward.

I carried the chicken to the table.

Ethan followed behind me holding folded napkins with dinosaurs on them.

He was five and still believed dinner meant people sat together because they loved each other.

He

looked at Vanessa and smiled.

“Hi.”

She smiled back politely.

“Oh my gosh. He’s huge.”

Blake laughed.

“He’s got Nora’s brains.”

Small pause.

“Hopefully my face.”

Everyone laughed.

Everyone except Ethan.

Kids always know.

Dinner started.

Vanessa talked.

Scottsdale.

Brand deals.

Retreats.

Pilates.

Followers.

Blake leaned in so far across the table I thought he might accidentally move states.

Every time I spoke, he interrupted.

Every time Vanessa made a joke, he laughed too hard.

Then came my favorite part.

The comparison.

Vanessa lifted her wine.

“You still working crazy hours?”

Before I answered—

Blake did.

“She basically lives at the office.”

I looked up.

He smiled.

“She likes staying busy.”

Vanessa tilted her head.

“That sounds exhausting.”

Blake shrugged.

“Some people are career people.”

Then—

looking directly at me—

“And some people know how to enjoy life.”

Something quiet settled inside me.

Because I suddenly realized—

this dinner wasn’t about Vanessa.

Vanessa was just a mirror.

He wanted me to look at another woman and feel insufficient.

Prettier.

Lighter.

Less tired.

Less practical.

More grateful.

I cut Ethan’s chicken.

Blake kept talking.

Then he said—

“Remember when we almost moved to Phoenix?”

Vanessa laughed.

“Oh God.”

Blake smiled.

“That would’ve been fun.”

I looked up.

Almost moved?

Interesting.

Because Blake and I had spent that year refinancing debt and trying to keep the mortgage.

There had never been a Phoenix plan.

Vanessa laughed.

“You would’ve hated it.”

He smiled.

“Depends who I moved with.”

Silence.

Tiny.

But enough.

Enough that even Ethan stopped chewing.

Vanessa looked awkward for the first time.

She smiled too quickly.

“Oh my God.”

Blake grinned.

“What?”

She took wine.

Nothing.

But I understood.

This wasn’t flirting.

This was nostalgia with an audience.

And I was the audience.

Dinner ended.

I cleared plates.

Blake didn’t move.

Vanessa offered once.

He stopped her.

“No, no. Nora likes organizing.”
