“For the bride,” she purred. My girl opened it—and a housekeeping uniform spilled into her shaking hands. My son-in-law laughed. “Perfect. Just what she’ll need at home.” My daughter’s eyes flooded, lips trembling. I stood up slowly. “Funny,” I said, placing my own box beside hers. “Because I brought a gift too… and it’s not for her.” When she lifted the lid, the room forgot how to breathe.
