My Husband Brought Home His Secretary and Newborn Twins—Then His Mother Offered Me $80 Million to Disappear
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

Part 1: My Husband Brought Home His Secretary and Newborn Twins—Then His Mother Offered Me $80 Million to Disappear

879 words

My husband walked into our home with his secretary beside him, while she carried newborn twin boys he proudly introduced as his own.

Then my mother-in-law calmly placed an $80 million check on the dining table and said, “Take it, disappear, and never come back.”

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t cry.

I simply smiled, packed one suitcase, and prepared to leave.

But before stepping outside, I left a sealed envelope with my husband’s name written across the front.

When he finally opened it, every trace of confidence disappeared from his face.

Connor entered our Atlanta home carrying a diaper bag as casually as if he had returned from an ordinary business trip. Behind him stood his secretary, Paige Callahan, holding two sleeping newborn boys wrapped in identical cream blankets.

My mother-in-law, Beatrice Albright, followed them inside with the composed expression of someone attending a family celebration rather than witnessing the destruction of my marriage.

I stood beneath the crystal chandelier and watched Connor bend down to kiss one baby gently on the forehead.

“Gwen,” he said proudly, “meet my sons.”

There was no apology in his voice.

No embarrassment.

Not even hesitation.

Paige lowered her eyes as though she felt uncomfortable, but the tiny smile she failed to hide told me otherwise.

Beatrice crossed the room, placed her designer handbag on the dining table, and removed a check filled out in her precise handwriting.

$80 million.

“Take it,” she said coldly. “Leave, and never come back. The Albright family finally has heirs.”

For twelve years, I had worked beside Connor to transform Albright Apex from his father’s failing investment firm into one of the country’s most powerful real-estate funds.

I negotiated financing.

I built the compliance department.

I handled crises that could have destroyed the company.

I helped create the empire Connor now behaved as though he had built entirely on his own.

But there was one detail Beatrice rarely acknowledged.

Through a

trust established by my late father, I controlled fifty-one percent of Albright Apex’s voting shares.

Most outsiders didn’t know that.

To Beatrice’s wealthy friends, I was simply “Connor’s wife.”

And over the past year, Connor had started introducing Paige as “the most valuable person in the company.”

Standing there watching her hold those babies, I finally understood just how valuable he thought she was.

I looked at the twins.

They were sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the chaos surrounding them.

Whatever Connor and Paige had done, those children were innocent.

I refused to use them as weapons.

So I smiled.

“Congratulations.”

Connor blinked.

That clearly wasn’t the reaction he expected.

He had probably imagined tears.

Beatrice expected a negotiation.

Paige looked prepared to watch me collapse.

Instead, I slid the $80 million check back toward Beatrice.

“Keep it.”

Then I turned and walked upstairs.

I packed one navy suitcase.

A

few clothes.

My passport.

My mother’s watch.

And the encrypted drive my attorney had repeatedly warned me never to leave unattended.

From downstairs, I could hear Connor laughing.

He probably believed my silence meant surrender.

What he didn’t know was that I had discovered his relationship with Paige three months earlier.

I knew about the luxury penthouse he had rented for her.

I knew company money had covered some of her medical expenses.

I had even uncovered consulting invoices that appeared to exist solely to disguise the payments.

I never confronted him.

Because anger fades.

Documents remain.

Before closing my suitcase, I opened the bedroom safe and removed one final item.

A sealed medical envelope.

Two years earlier, after eighteen months of unsuccessful attempts to have a child, Connor and I had undergone fertility testing.

I attended every appointment.

Connor skipped the final consultation.

Whenever I tried to discuss the results afterward, he became furious.

“Never mention this again.”

So I didn’t.

But I kept the original medical report exactly as the clinic had given it to us.

Now I took a pen and wrote two words across the envelope.

Connor Albright.

I carried it downstairs and placed it on the dining table beside Beatrice’s untouched $80 million check.

Then I pulled my suitcase toward the front door.

Just before I stepped outside, Connor noticed the envelope.

“What’s this?”

He picked it up with an irritated laugh and tore it open.

I stopped at the doorway.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Connor began reading.

His expression changed almost immediately.

The arrogant smile vanished first.

Then the color disappeared from his face.

His fingers started trembling as his eyes moved back and forth across the report.

The date.

The patient information.

The doctor’s signature.

He read the same lines again and again, as though repetition might somehow change what was written there.

Then his legs seemed to lose their strength.

Connor dropped onto the limestone floor, still gripping the medical report.

“No…”

The word barely escaped his lips.

He slowly lifted his head and looked toward Paige.

Then toward the sleeping twins in her arms.

His face had gone completely pale.

“No,” he whispered again.

“That can’t be possible.”
