At exactly five in the morning, my security alarm sliced through the silence of my mountain cabin.
My phone rang seconds later.
“Mrs. Harland,” the guard whispered, “your daughter-in-law is at the gate with a moving truck. She says she owns the property now.”
I sat up slowly, tied my robe, and reached for the cup of tea beside my bed.
“Let her in,” I said.
Outside, Melissa stepped from her black sedan in a tailored coat and high heels, waving a folder of papers like a victory flag. Three movers followed her toward my porch.
She had spent months telling neighbors I was forgetful. She had convinced my son, Daniel, that I could no longer manage my own affairs. Then she brought me financial forms, created a company using my family name, and forged my signature on a deed.
She believed I had gone to visit a friend.
She believed the cabin was empty.
She believed the old woman she had carefully discredited would never fight
back.
Through six hidden cameras, I watched her unlock my front door with a stolen spare key.
“Start with the bedroom,” she ordered. “Everything in this house belongs to me now.”
One mover hesitated. “Did the owner authorize this?”
Melissa smiled.
“I am the owner.”
I took one slow sip of tea and opened my bedroom door.
She still had no idea that the night before, my lawyer had completed the one transfer that made every document in Melissa’s hands worthless.
