“You gave him a daughter.
Chapter 1
“You gave him a daughter.
You should be grateful he still lets you live here.”
Those were the first words Taylor Solomon heard when she returned to her home outside Richmond, Virginia, only five days after an emergency C-section.
Her newborn daughter, Lisa, slept against her chest inside a soft gray carrier. Taylor’s body still ached whenever she took a step, and the doctor had warned her not to climb stairs, lift anything heavy, or remain standing for too long.
But Spencer had not answered her calls.
He had not visited the hospital in three days. He had not even arranged for someone to bring her home.
Taylor finally took a rideshare because something deep inside her told her that waiting any longer would only bring another excuse.
The moment she entered the house, she knew she had been right.
A floral perfume she did not recognize floated through the foyer. Two glasses rested beside
an open bottle on the living room table. A pair of silver heels had been left near the staircase.
Then she heard laughter coming from the second floor.
Taylor climbed slowly, one hand holding the railing while the other protected Lisa. Every step pulled painfully at her healing incision, but the sound of Spencer’s voice kept drawing her forward.
When she reached the bedroom, the door was partly open.
Inside, Spencer sat on the edge of their bed wearing only his trousers. Beside him stood Kaylie Wagner, the marketing consultant he had hired six months earlier.
Kaylie was wearing Taylor’s cream silk robe.
For one terrible moment, no one spoke.
Then Spencer frowned as though Taylor had interrupted an important meeting.
“Why are you here?”
Taylor stared at him.
“I live here.”
Kaylie folded her arms and smiled without embarrassment.
“You were supposed to stay at the hospital another night.”
Taylor looked from Kaylie to her husband.
“You knew when I was coming home?”
Spencer stood and quickly buttoned his shirt.
“This is not what it looks like.”
Before Taylor could answer, Martha Shelton appeared in the hallway. Spencer’s mother had been staying in the guest suite for several weeks, claiming Taylor would need help after the baby arrived.
Yet Martha had refused to drive her to the hospital when labor began.
She had said childbirth was something women had handled for centuries and accused Taylor of being dramatic.
Now Martha glanced into the bedroom, saw Kaylie wearing Taylor’s robe, and showed no surprise at all.
“Take the baby downstairs,” she said coldly. “Spencer has been under tremendous pressure. A successful man needs peace, not constant demands.”
Taylor tightened her arms around Lisa.
“I called him nineteen times while the doctors were preparing me for surgery.”
Martha gave a dismissive
shrug.
“And you both survived.”
Spencer sighed.
“Taylor, do not turn this into a scene.”
Something changed inside her at that moment.
