Chapter 2

Sebastian didn't leave the hospital for a single minute.
Every monitor attached to Clara felt like a personal accusation, each soft beep reminding him that while he had been negotiating million-dollar contracts across the country, the woman who had sacrificed everything for him had been starving beneath his own roof. The guilt was almost unbearable.
When Clara finally drifted into a light sleep, the obstetrician approached him again.
"There was something else," the doctor said quietly. "These bruises weren't caused by simple falls. Someone repeatedly forced her to kneel on hard surfaces."
Sebastian's jaw tightened.
"And judging by the condition of her wrists," the doctor continued, "she's been subjected to ongoing physical restraint."
His blood turned cold.
He immediately called the head of his private security team.
"I want every security recording from my house over the last six months. Every camera. Every hallway. Every minute."
"Yes, sir."
Less than an hour later, the security chief arrived carrying several
encrypted hard drives.
His expression was grim.
"Mr. Vance... someone has been deleting footage."
Sebastian frowned.
"Deleting?"
"Not professionally. Entire days disappeared, but whoever did it overlooked one backup server hidden from the main network."
Within minutes, the recovered footage appeared on the conference room monitor.
Sebastian watched in stunned silence.
His mother wasn't simply humiliating Clara.
She had ordered the household staff never to serve her proper meals.
She confiscated prenatal vitamins.
She forced Clara to scrub floors on her hands and knees.
Whenever Clara became dizzy, Eleanor accused her of pretending to gain sympathy.
Even worse...
Julian appeared in several recordings.
Instead of stopping their mother, he laughed.
Then another video surfaced.
The date was only three days earlier.
Eleanor sat with her closest friends, smiling as she lifted a crystal wine glass.
"Once the baby is born," she said confidently, "Sebastian will sign whatever papers I place
in front of him. He always trusts family."
One guest asked softly, "And if Clara refuses?"
Eleanor smiled.
"She won't have the strength."
The room fell silent.
But Sebastian noticed something no one else seemed to.
In the reflection of the dining room mirror, someone was secretly recording the entire conversation from the hallway.
He froze the frame.
The shadow holding the phone looked strangely familiar.
Sebastian leaned closer to the monitor.
"Zoom in."
The security chief enlarged the reflection.
A narrow wrist.
A silver bracelet.
A dark housekeeping uniform.
Sebastian recognized the bracelet immediately.
It belonged to Rosa Alvarez, the housekeeper who had worked for his family for nearly seven years.
"Find her," Sebastian said.
Rosa arrived at the hospital forty minutes later with swollen eyes and a handbag clutched tightly against her chest.
The moment she saw Sebastian, she began crying.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Vance. I should have
told you sooner."
Sebastian's anger disappeared beneath a colder emotion.
"Tell me everything."
Rosa sat down.
She explained that Eleanor had threatened every employee in the house.
Anyone who gave Clara extra food would be fired.
Anyone who contacted Sebastian would lose severance and references.
Julian had reinforced the threats, boasting that once he became an executive in Sebastian's company, none of them would ever work in Chicago again.
Rosa had secretly started recording after finding Clara unconscious beside the laundry room one afternoon.
"I gave her food when I could," Rosa whispered. "Protein bars. Soup. Fruit. But your mother started checking the trash and counting groceries."
Sebastian closed his eyes.
Then Rosa reached into her handbag and removed a small flash drive.
"I copied what I could before Mrs. Vance realized someone was watching her."
Sebastian inserted the drive into the laptop.
The first folder contained photographs.
The second contained audio recordings.
The third was labeled FAMILY TRUST.
Inside were scanned legal documents bearing Sebastian's signature.
Except Sebastian had never signed them.
He stared at the pages.
They transferred voting control of twenty-two percent of Vance Global Logistics into a private family holding company managed by Eleanor and Julian.
Another document authorized Julian to access a corporate emergency credit facility worth twelve million dollars.
A third designated Eleanor as temporary trustee over Sebastian's personal estate in the event he became medically incapacitated.
Every signature looked convincing.
Almost perfect.
But Sebastian knew his own handwriting.
"They forged these."
The security chief's face hardened.
Rosa nodded.
"I heard Mr. Julian talking about a notary."
Sebastian's stomach tightened.
"What notary?"
Rosa opened another recording.
Julian's voice filled the room.
"If Clara delivers early, Sebastian will be distracted. Mom says that's when we move the money. He won't review anything until the baby is home."
Eleanor answered.
"And if he does notice, we remind him who sacrificed everything to raise him."
Sebastian stopped the recording.
For years, those words had controlled him.
Sacrifice.
Family.
Debt.
He had mistaken guilt for loyalty.
Now his wife and unborn child had nearly paid the price.
He called his general counsel.
"Freeze every corporate authorization connected to Eleanor Vance or Julian Vance."
Then he called the bank.
"Lock every card, line of credit, trust account, and household account my mother can access."
Finally, he called a forensic accountant.
By midnight, the first report arrived.
Eleanor hadn't merely spent recklessly.
Over eighteen months, she and Julian had routed more than $3.8 million through shell consulting companies.
Luxury travel.
Designer jewelry.
Private club memberships.
Payments to a notary.
And one recurring transfer to a company Sebastian had never heard of.
Northlake Maternal Services.
The name made his chest tighten.
He opened the transaction history.
The first payment had been made six months earlier.
The memo line contained only four words.
Clara Vance medical management.
