Chapter 1
"Women who survive on a man's money belong under the table!" my mother declared.
Laughter erupted throughout the dining room.
I froze just inside the front entrance.
I'd only come home because I'd forgotten a folder containing documents for a multimillion-dollar contract meeting. It was just after eleven-thirty that morning, and my executive team was already waiting for me downtown.
The moment I stepped inside, I caught the scent of expensive perfume, imported wine, and freshly prepared seafood.
My name is Sebastian Vance.
Over the last twelve years, I'd built an international logistics company from nothing into a business employing more than a thousand people.
None of it would have happened without my wife, Clara.
When my first company collapsed, she sold the gold earrings her grandmother had left her so we could pay our debts.
She worked exhausting double shifts while I tried to rebuild from bankruptcy.
I owed another debt to my mother, Eleanor.
She raised my younger brother Julian and me
alone after my father died, never letting us forget how much she'd sacrificed.
When my business finally succeeded, I bought a large home in an upscale gated community outside Chicago and invited her to live with us.
I believed she'd treat Clara as family.
Instead...
Clara was now eight months pregnant with our first child after six painful years of fertility treatments, miscarriages, and endless medical appointments.
Because I traveled constantly for work, I gave my mother unrestricted access to one of my credit cards.
She was supposed to buy groceries, prenatal vitamins, healthy meals, and anything Clara or the baby needed.
Every evening she'd reassure me.
"I made her homemade stew today."
"She had baked salmon for dinner."
"I'm taking wonderful care of your wife."
Clara always smiled quietly whenever I asked how she was feeling.
She'd been losing weight throughout the pregnancy, but I blamed it on the
physical strain of carrying the baby.
Now I realized how wrong I had been.
I quietly walked toward the dining room.
The table was covered with lobster, premium steaks, imported wine, gourmet desserts, and shopping bags from luxury boutiques.
My mother sat proudly at the head of the table, entertaining six elegantly dressed friends.
At first...
I couldn't find Clara.
Then one of the women casually tossed a leftover bone onto the floor.
My eyes followed it beneath the tablecloth.
There she was.
On her knees.
Her maternity dress was stained.
Her swollen belly rested awkwardly against her legs as she supported it with one hand.
In front of her sat a cheap plastic plate holding nothing but discarded bread crusts, shrimp shells, scraps of meat, and leftovers from everyone else's meal.
With trembling fingers, she tried to pull a small piece of meat from a bone.
One guest laughed.
"Once that baby arrives, Sebastian will finally replace her with someone more suitable."
My mother slowly raised her wine glass.
"We only needed her to give us a grandson," she replied without hesitation. "After that, my son deserves a wife worthy of his status. When she's finished cleaning up those scraps, she can go scrub the bathrooms."
Something inside me shattered.
I stepped into the room.
Without warning, I pulled the tablecloth aside.
Clara looked up, her face instantly filled with fear.
"Sebastian..." she whispered. "I wanted to sit down here..."
Even then...
She was trying to protect my mother.
I gently helped her to her feet.
Wrapped my suit jacket around her shoulders.
Held her close.
Then I reached for the edge of the banquet table.
With every ounce of strength I had...
I flipped it.
Plates exploded across the marble floor.
Crystal glasses shattered.
Wine, seafood, silverware, and expensive china crashed in every direction.
The women screamed.
My mother jumped to her feet.
"Have you lost your mind?" she shouted. "I'm your mother!"
I met her eyes.
"And she's my wife."
My voice was quiet enough to silence the room.
"The child she's carrying is my son. Neither of them mattered to you."
Within minutes, private security arrived and escorted every guest out of the house.
I carried Clara to the car and drove directly to a private hospital.
Two hours later, the obstetrician stepped into the waiting room.
His expression alone told me something was terribly wrong.
"Mr. Vance," he said, "your wife is suffering from severe malnutrition, advanced anemia, and prolonged physical exhaustion."
He paused before continuing.
"Your baby is showing signs of distress. Had she arrived even one day later, we might have lost them both."
Then he showed me the bruises.
Dark marks covered Clara's knees.
Others stretched across her lower ribs.
What I uncovered over the following hours made the betrayal inside my own home seem even darker than I had imagined.
