“My Granddaughter S:lapp:ed Me in Front of 23 Guests at My 70th Birthday and Shouted, ‘You’re in the Way Now’; That Same Night, I Discovered I Could Take Away Everything She Thought Was Hers Without Asking Anyone’s Permission”

PART 1

“You’re in the way now, Grandma, and you honestly should have d:ie:d years ago.”

That was what my granddaughter Delilah shouted at me in front of twenty-three people, just before sl:appin:g me so hard that my lip split during my seventieth birthday dinner.

I fell against the dark walnut sideboard in the dining room. My glasses shattered beneath me, and the ivory silk blouse I had bought for that evening was stained with bl00d. No one moved. Not her in-laws, not her friends, not her husband’s business partners. They all stood there staring as if they had just witnessed a scene from a soap opera, but without knowing whether they should applaud or call an ambulance.

My name is Henrietta Vance, although many people in Chestnut Hill know me as Mrs. Vance. For forty years, I built Vance Publishing from a tiny rented shop near Pine Street into one of Pennsylvania’s most respected independent publishing houses.

My daughter Rebecca d:ie:d of can//cer when she was thirty-nine. She left behind Delilah, an eight-year-old girl with braids, a school uniform, and a doll she wouldn't let go of, not even to take a bath. From

that moment on, I became her grandmother, her mother, her father, her home, and her refuge.

I paid for private school, ballet lessons, trips to Cape Cod, her degree at Georgetown, and her master’s program in London. When she married Lucas, the son of a business family from Baltimore, I gave her the down payment for a house in Potomac. When she wanted to open a literary agency, I gave her a multimillion-dollar fund and appointed her vice president of my publishing company.

That night, my birthday dinner was held at my home in Chestnut Hill, where she had grown up. There was roasted prime rib, butternut squash soup, American wine, and a cream cake I had ordered myself.

Delilah arrived forty minutes late, wearing a gold dress, extremely high heels, and the diamond bracelet I had given her for her thirtieth birthday. She didn't hug me. She didn't wish

me a happy birthday. She simply looked around the dining room as if it already belonged to her.

When we sat down, I noticed that my place card had been moved. I was supposed to sit at the head of the table, but Delilah had taken my seat. She had left me sitting almost beside the kitchen.

I said nothing.

Halfway through dinner, she raised her glass.

“Lucas and I have decided that the publishing company needs new blood. Starting Monday, I will take over as CEO. My grandmother did what she could, but she no longer understands the modern world.”

I felt my entire body go cold.

“Delilah,” I said, “this isn't the time.”

She smiled.

“Of course it is. Enough with everyone pretending you're still indispensable. You're a burden.”

I stood up and told her to apologize. She walked toward me, her eyes filled with anger.

“As long

as you're alive, I'll never be anybody.”

Then she h:it me.

As I lay on the floor with bl00d in my mouth, I realized something that hurt far more than the slap: the little girl I had raised no longer existed.

I couldn't believe what was about to happen...
