Part 3 — The Man Who Chose Her When Ryan Walked Away

The invitation arrived 3 days before the event.

It was a formal corporate gala, 1 of the biggest of the year, hosted by Hale Enterprises. Elara stared at the card longer than she should have, her fingers tracing the embossed gold letters as if they held answers she was not ready for.

“You don’t have to go,” Sebastian said from across the room, his voice calm as always.

Elara looked up at him.

“And hide?” she asked quietly.

His gaze softened slightly.

“They’ll talk.”

“They already are,” she replied.

That settled it.

She was going.

The night of the event felt different. Not like the wedding. Not like the chaos that followed. This time, Elara was walking in knowing exactly who she was.

The venue was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers, soft golden lighting, quiet conversations blending with the sound of glasses clinking gently.

Sebastian walked beside her, steady and composed, his presence grounding in a way she was slowly

beginning to understand.

As they stepped inside, heads turned. Not loudly. Not dramatically. But enough.

Whispers followed them. Not pity this time. Something else.

Curiosity. Respect. Power.

Elara felt Sebastian’s hand lightly brush against hers. Not holding. Not claiming. Only there.

Somehow, that small contact said more than anything else.

“You okay?” he asked under his breath.

She nodded.

“I am.”

For the first time, she meant it.

They had barely made it halfway into the hall when it happened.

A familiar, unwanted voice called out.

“Elara?”

Her body froze before her mind could catch up.

Slowly, she turned.

Ryan stood only a few steps away, dressed perfectly, as if nothing had ever happened, as if he had not destroyed her in front of everyone.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

His eyes searched her face, confusion turning quickly into disbelief.

“You,” he started.

Then his gaze shifted to

Sebastian.

Everything changed.

His expression hardened instantly.

“You married him?”

His voice rose slightly, sharp with anger.

“You married my brother?”

The room around them did not go silent, but it felt like it did. Everything narrowed down to that moment.

Elara felt the old version of herself, the one who would have panicked, the one who would have tried to explain.

But she was not there anymore.

Elara met his gaze calmly.

“You don’t get to question me,” she said, her voice steady.

Ryan let out a short, bitter laugh.

“Unbelievable. I leave for a little while and you, what? You replace me with him?”

Before Elara could respond, Sebastian stepped forward. Not aggressively. Not loudly. With quiet authority that shifted everything.

“Careful,” he said.

Only 1 word, but it carried weight.

Ryan scoffed, turning fully toward him now.

“Or what?” he challenged. “You think this is funny? Taking

what’s mine?”

Something in Sebastian’s expression changed. Not anger. Something colder.

“Nothing about her was ever yours,” he said evenly.

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“You think you’ve won?” he snapped. “You think marrying her gives you anything?”

That was when Sebastian did something unexpected. He did not argue. He did not raise his voice. He simply looked at Ryan and spoke.

“You should check the board decisions from last week.”

Ryan frowned, confusion flashing across his face.

“What are you talking about?”

“I watched it happen,” Sebastian said.

Realization slowly began to form.

The company. The shares. The control Ryan thought he still had.

Gone.

Transferred.

Signed away.

Protected.

And now connected to Elara.

His expression shifted completely.

“What did you do?” he demanded, his voice no longer steady.

This time, Elara stepped forward.

“You walked away from everything,” she said quietly.

Ryan’s eyes snapped to hers.

“I didn’t think you meant—”

“You didn’t think at all,” she interrupted gently.

Silence stretched between them, heavy and final.

“You didn’t lose me at the altar, Ryan,” Elara continued, her voice calm but firm. “You lost me the moment you decided I wasn’t worth staying for.”

Ryan did not respond. He did not argue, because there was nothing left to say.

Elara took a small step back and, without hesitation, reached for Sebastian’s hand.

This time, Sebastian did not hesitate either. His fingers closed around hers, steady and sure.

Together, they turned away, leaving Ryan exactly where he had chosen to be.

Behind them.

They did not stop walking until the noise behind them disappeared.

The night air felt cool against Elara’s skin as they stepped outside, quieter than everything they had left behind. Sebastian opened the car door, and she slid in slowly, adjusting her dress with steady hands.

Not shaking.

Not breaking.

Only calm.

Sebastian got in beside her, and the door closed softly. For a moment, they said nothing. The car began to move, city lights passing silently beyond the windows.

Elara stared ahead before finally speaking.

“I thought seeing him again would hurt.”

Sebastian turned slightly.

“But it didn’t,” he said.

She shook her head.

“No.”

A small pause followed.

Then, softer, she said, “I think I stopped loving him the moment he left.”

Silence settled again.

THE END.
