Part 2 — The Name Beneath the Veil

Just like that, the world shifted.

For a moment, Elara could not hear anything. Not the whispers. Not the music. Not even her own heartbeat. All she could see was Sebastian standing in front of her as though this were not madness, as though this were not the most impossible thing he could have asked.

Marry me.

The words echoed in her mind again and again.

She should have said no. She should have walked away.

Then she looked around at the guests, at the pity in their eyes and the quiet judgment already forming on their lips.

The girl who got left at the altar.

That was going to be her.

Something inside her refused to accept it.

Slowly, she lifted her gaze back to Sebastian.

“Why would you do this?” she whispered.

His expression did not change.

“Because I can,” he said simply.

Then, softer, he added, “And because you need a way out.”

Her chest tightened.

He was not wrong.

But this was insane.

“Are you going to regret this?” she asked.

He held her gaze steadily.

“No.”

That single word settled something inside her. Not completely, but enough.

She took a small breath.

“Okay.”

The word left her lips before she could stop it.

Just like that, everything changed.

The ceremony resumed, but nothing felt real anymore. The priest spoke, but his voice sounded distant, as if coming from another room. Elara’s hands were still trembling when Sebastian took them in his. His grip was warm, steady, grounding.

“Relax,” he murmured quietly, just for her.

“I’m trying,” she whispered back, barely moving her lips.

Somehow, that small exchange made it feel less terrifying.

The vows began. Promises Elara had not prepared. Words she had never imagined saying to him.

And yet she said them.

Every single one.

Then it was Sebastian’s turn.

His voice was calm and controlled, but there was something underneath it. Something deeper. Something real.

When the time came, he reached up slowly and lifted her veil.

Their eyes met, and for a second, everything else disappeared. The room. The people. The chaos. All of it was gone.

It was only Sebastian and the way he was looking at her, as if she mattered. As if she had always mattered.

Then he whispered, “I’ve been waiting for you, Clara.”

Elara’s heart stopped.

Clara.

The name struck her like a quiet shock. She opened her mouth to speak, but the priest continued.

“And now, you may seal your vows.”

Before she could question it, Sebastian leaned in and kissed her.

Married life did not feel the way Elara had expected. Not even close.

There was no awkwardness, no forced conversation, no tension in the way most people would imagine. Instead,

there was silence. Careful, controlled silence.

Sebastian made sure she lacked nothing. Everything she needed appeared before she even asked. Clothes. Food. Comfort. Even small things, like the way her coffee was always made exactly how she liked it.

She had never told him how.

He simply knew.

But despite all that, he never touched her.

Not once.

Not casually. Not accidentally.

At night, they shared the same room and the same bed, but there was always space between them. A quiet, respectful distance. As if he were afraid of crossing a line.

Or perhaps afraid of something else.

One night, Elara turned to him, unable to keep the question inside anymore.

“Why won’t you touch me?”

The question came out softer than she expected.

Sebastian did not answer immediately. When he did, his voice was low.

“Because I don’t want you to feel like you owe me anything.”

That answer stayed with her longer than she expected.

The memory did not come back all at once. It came in pieces, fragments and feelings.

A night she had tried to forget.

Rain. Cold air. Footsteps behind her.

Then impact.

A body crashing into hers.

She remembered the weight, the smell of blood, and the panic that took over her instantly.

“Hey. Hey, stay with me,” she had said, trying to hold him up.

He was barely conscious, barely breathing. People walked past. No one stopped. No one helped.

So she did.

She called for help. She pressed her hands against his wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

“You’re not dying tonight,” she whispered.

That part she remembered clearly.

The way his fingers weakly held onto hers, as if he did not want to let go.

“Your name,” he had murmured.

Elara had hesitated. She had not wanted to be involved. She had not wanted questions. She had not wanted trouble.

So she gave him a name that was not hers.

Clara.

The ambulance came. They took him away.

And she left.

She did not even look back. She did not know if he lived. She did not know who he was.

Until now.

“I looked for you.”

Sebastian’s voice broke the silence. Not loud. Not dramatic. Honest.

“I didn’t stop looking,” he continued. “Even when I had nothing to go on.”

Elara turned to him slowly.

“Why?”

The question felt heavier than she expected.

He met her eyes.

“Because you were the only person who stayed.”

Her chest tightened.

He told her everything. How he woke up alone. How no one knew who Clara was. How that 1 moment stayed with him for years.

“I thought I imagined you at some point,” he admitted softly. “And then I saw you again.”

Her breath caught.

“With Ryan,” he added.

Silence filled the space between them.

“I couldn’t take you from him,” Sebastian said. “So I let you go.”

“And now?” Elara asked quietly.

His answer came without hesitation.

“Now I’m not letting you go again.”
