Chapter 4

“I need you to understand something,” my attorney said quietly.
“Garrett could not have moved those funds without an internal authorization code.”
Only three people possessed that code: Garrett, me, and my father.
My phone rang again.
This time, it was Dad.
“Charlotte, don’t speak to the police,” he said urgently. “Garrett made mistakes, but we can fix this privately.”
“Where is he?”
A pause.
Then I heard a door close behind him.
“You’re confused because of the medication.”
Detective Ortiz leaned closer, listening.
In the background, a man coughed.
I recognized that cough.
Garrett was with my parents.
Before I could speak, my father lowered his voice.
“If you release those company records, you won’t only destroy Garrett. You’ll expose what your mother did seven years ago.”
The call ended.
My attorney stared at me, pale.
Then she opened an archived trust file and pointed to a signature beneath my name.
It was not mine.
THE END.
