Chapter 3

My attorney responded within three minutes.
“Charlotte, once I file this, there is no quiet way back.”
“There was never a way back,” I whispered.
By midnight, the bank had suspended my parents’ mortgage approval pending verification of the withdrawn guarantee. At 12:17, their realtor called. At 12:26, the sellers canceled the closing.
My mother called me fourteen times.
I answered the fifteenth.
“What have you done?” she demanded. “We already sold our apartment!”
“You made your choice,” I said. “Now live with it.”
Her shocked silence almost made me laugh, but the movement sent pain tearing through my ribs.
Before she could respond, a nurse entered with Detective Lena Ortiz. The detective placed a tablet beside my bed. My neighbor’s security camera had captured Garrett dragging me away from the phone, then calmly opening the front door for the paramedics.
His story about the stairs was finished.
But Garrett had already disappeared.
At dawn, my
attorney arrived carrying documents from Andrews Development. The missing eighty thousand dollars had not gone toward a business investment. Garrett had transferred it into a shell company controlled by my father.
More records revealed that my parents’ down payment had also come from the same account.
They had not merely ignored the violence.
They had been benefiting from it.
