Part 3 — The Moment He Saw Her
Because some people don’t look at women.
Chapter 3

Because some people don’t look at women.
They look at outcomes.
And June looked exactly like Caleb.
Not vaguely.
Not emotionally.
Exactly.
Same eyes.
Same mouth.
Same impossible left eyebrow.
I felt him before I saw him.
That strange instinct.
Then—
there he was.
Caleb.
Older.
Sharper.
Expensive.
Sarah beside him.
Perfect hair.
Corporate smile.
Her hand resting possessively on his arm.
Someone was introducing them.
“…power couple…”
Interesting.
Caleb turned casually.
Then froze.
His wine glass slipped.
Hit the marble.
Shattered.
Sarah turned.
Looked at me.
Then at June.
Then back.
Her face emptied.
Because she saw it too.
Children don’t lie.
June looked up at me.
Then pointed.
“Mama.”
Too loud.
Too clear.
The room shifted.
Caleb stared.
His mouth opened.
Closed.
Opened again.
He took one step.
Stopped.
His eyes dropped.
Not to me.
To June.
Then lower.
Age.
Height.
Timing.
Math.
His face changed.
I watched it happen.
The exact second.
Two years.
Subtracted.
Counted.
Understood.
Sarah turned slowly.
“…Caleb?”
Nothing.
She looked at June.
Then asked quietly:
“How old is she?”
Nobody moved.
Caleb swallowed.
Once.
His voice barely came out.
“Two.”
Sarah looked at him.
And realized.
Not affair.
Timeline.
Choice.
She laughed once.
Small.
Disbelieving.
Then asked:
“She was pregnant?”
