Part 2 — The Life I Built Without Him
The first six months were ugly.
Chapter 2

The first six months were ugly.
Nobody writes about that part.
Stories love dramatic exits.
Nobody talks about throwing up in a rented apartment bathroom in another city while trying not to panic because your doctor appointment is in a language you barely speak.
Nobody talks about opening a spreadsheet to calculate diapers and realizing you are now one person doing the work of two.
Nobody talks about waking up at three in the morning and reaching for someone who quit loving you before your child existed.
I almost told him.
Twice.
Once after the twelve-week scan.
Once after hearing the heartbeat.
Both times I stopped.
Not from revenge.
From clarity.
He had already chosen.
The baby didn’t deserve to become evidence in a marriage trial.
So I signed the divorce.
No alimony.
No fight.
No mention of pregnancy.
His lawyer looked confused.
Caleb looked relieved.
That hurt more than anything.
He thought I left because
I was dignified.
Not because I was carrying the one thing he said never came.
—
Two years later—
my daughter preferred yellow shoes.
Only yellow.
She refused blueberries.
Loved elevators.
Called ducks “boat birds.”
And laughed with her entire body.
Her name was June.
Because she arrived in summer after years of winter.
That evening—
I wasn’t supposed to be at the gala.
A former client insisted.
Corporate charity event.
Downtown Chicago.
Glass walls.
Champagne.
People pretending networking was human connection.
I almost declined.
Then June found my heels and announced:
“Mama pretty.”
So we went.
She wore a tiny ivory dress.
Curly hair.
Patent shoes.
One hand in mine.
The ballroom doors opened.
Nobody noticed us.
Until they did.
