Anthony thought I was a corporate consultant.
Chapter 2

Anthony thought I was a corporate consultant.
Eleanor thought I was lucky.
The truth was different.
For more than twelve years, I had served in the United States Army.
A senior officer.
Assigned to one of the military’s most highly classified commands.
Strategic national security operations.
Because every mission demanded absolute secrecy, almost no one outside senior leadership knew my true responsibilities.
Even my husband believed I was a consultant.
I never corrected him.
Sometimes the safest secret is the one nobody thinks to question.
At 6:42 the next morning—
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The door rattled.
I was awake instantly.
Military training kicked in.
Eleanor’s voice cut through the hallway.
“OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW, MARISSA! You spoiled little gold digger!”
On the security monitor, she stood with Anthony.
Both looked entitled.
Both looked furious.
Anthony kept glancing at the door, waiting for me to crumble.
He still believed intimidation worked.
He still believed I was the
woman who apologized to keep the peace.
He was wrong.
I moved to the dining table.
Beside my divorce decree lay the black folder.
Copies of every unauthorized charge made during our marriage.
Eleanor’s luxury purchases.
Anthony’s so-called temporary transfers.
Every receipt.
Every statement.
Every piece of evidence.
Outside, Eleanor pounded harder.
“Open this door! You owe this family!”
A quiet smile crossed my face.
Not because I enjoyed their panic.
Because they still believed they were threatening a helpless ex-wife.
They had no idea they were confronting a senior officer of the United States Army.
And within the next few hours, they would discover that the woman they spent years exploiting had never been powerless.
I had spent years quietly documenting everything they had taken from me.
Now it was time to let the evidence speak.
But were they ready for what I was about to unlock?
