Chapter 1
The divorce papers were barely dry when Anthony’s call came in.
I was still standing in my kitchen, coffee cup in hand.
“What the hell did you do, Marissa?”
His rage was almost theatrical.
“My mother’s platinum card was declined at Bergdorf Goodman! Do you have any idea how humiliating that was? Half the Upper East Side watched her get treated like a criminal!”
I looked at the Manhattan skyline and said nothing for a moment.
For five years, Eleanor had drained my accounts like they were her personal inheritance.
Designer handbags.
Private shopping appointments.
Luxury vacations.
Spa memberships.
She spent my money while telling everyone I wasn’t worthy of her son.
To her, I was simply an unlimited credit card.
“They didn’t treat your mother like a criminal,” I said. “They reminded her that if your name isn’t on the card, you don’t get to use it.”
Anthony fell silent.
“The divorce is final,” I continued. “Eleanor is your mother.
She stopped being my responsibility yesterday. If she still wants Chanel handbags on Fifth Avenue, you can figure out how to pay for them.”
I ended the call and blocked him.
For the first time in years, my apartment was completely silent.
No criticism. No demands. No guilt.
I opened a bottle of Amarone, ordered my favorite dinner, and let the city lights settle me.
For the first time since my wedding day, I felt free.
