Chapter 2

One of the guards reached for her arm, but Brenda jerked away.
“Don’t touch me.”
She pointed at me instead.
“This is her fault. Everything is always her fault. She brought that child here. She broke the rules. She lied to everyone.”
“I didn’t lie,” I said. “I was desperate.”
“You always have an excuse.”
Her voice cracked through the room with years of stored resentment.
“When my son met you, you had an excuse. When he lost his scholarship, you had an excuse. When he disappeared, you had an excuse. And now you bring his child into a restaurant and hide her like stolen property.”
My stomach turned.
Alexander’s gaze sharpened.
“Your son disappeared?”
Brenda laughed once, without humor.
“That’s what Hannah tells people.”
“It’s the truth,” I said.
“Is it?”
She leaned toward me before the guard forced her back.
“You never even looked for him.”
“I filed a missing-person report.”
“You stopped calling after three months.”
“Because the police
told me he had emptied his account and left willingly.”
Brenda’s face twisted.
“You believed them because it was convenient.”
“No,” I said. “I believed them because I found the note.”
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
Brenda went still.
Alexander watched both of us.
“What note?” he asked.
I tightened my arms around Paige.
Eight months earlier, when I was seven months pregnant, I had come home from a prenatal appointment to find half of Daniel’s clothes gone. His passport was missing. His laptop was gone. On the kitchen table sat a folded sheet of paper with four sentences written in his handwriting.
I’m sorry.
I can’t do this.
Don’t look for me.
Tell my mother I finally chose myself.
I had read those words until they blurred.
Then I had hidden the note inside an old cookbook because I couldn’t bear to see it
again.
Brenda stared at me as though I had struck her.
“He didn’t write that.”
“Yes, he did.”
“No.”
“I know his handwriting.”
“You know nothing about my son.”
Alexander moved toward his desk.
“Was the note examined?”
“By the police,” I said. “They said it appeared genuine.”
“And you still have it?”
“At home.”
Brenda suddenly smiled.
It was a small, chilling smile.
“Then bring it here.”
The guard tightened his grip on her shoulder.
Alexander’s attention fixed on her.
“Why?”
“Because she’s lying.”
But the answer came too quickly.
Alexander pressed another button under his desk.
A different voice answered through the speaker.
“Yes, sir?”
“Call Detective Marcus Lee. Tell him I need him at The Grandview immediately. Ask him to bring someone from digital forensics.”
Brenda’s smile disappeared.
I looked at Alexander.
“You know the detective who handled Daniel’s case?”
“I know many people.”
His tone was
flat, but his eyes remained on Brenda.
“And I know when someone is more afraid of an old note than of being caught on camera carrying a baby into a restricted basement.”
Brenda closed her eyes.
For one second, she looked exhausted rather than dangerous.
Then she whispered, “You have no idea what you’ve done.”
The guards took her upstairs.
The office door shut behind them.
Silence returned.
I sank into the nearest chair, holding Paige so tightly she made a soft sound of protest.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered, loosening my grip. “Mommy’s sorry.”
Alexander poured water into a glass and handed it to me.
My fingers trembled too badly to hold it.
He crouched in front of me.
“Drink.”
It was not gentle, exactly. Alexander Remington did not sound gentle even when he was trying to help. But there was steadiness in his voice, and I found myself obeying.
I took one swallow.
Then another.
“Why did she bring Paige down here?” I asked.
“That is the question.”
“She wanted me fired.”
“Possibly.”
“She could have simply reported that I brought a baby to work.”
“Yes.”
“Then why move her?”
Alexander looked toward the paused recording.
“Because firing you was not enough.”
A cold sensation crawled over my skin.
“What else could she want?”
He stood.
“To make it appear that you endangered your daughter. To create witnesses. To create evidence. Perhaps to involve the father.”
“But Daniel is gone.”
Alexander turned toward me.
“Are you sure?”
The question landed like a blow.
I looked down at Paige’s sleeping face.
“No,” I admitted. “I’m not sure of anything anymore.”
A knock sounded at the office door.
One of the guards stepped inside.
“Sir, there’s a problem.”
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“What problem?”
“Ms. Gable’s phone is missing.”
“She had it when she came downstairs.”
“We searched her. It wasn’t on her.”
“Check the hallway, dining room, kitchen, and staff lockers.”
“We already started.”
Alexander looked at the monitor again.
“Review the footage from the moment she entered the basement corridor.”
The guard hesitated.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“The recording skips.”
Alexander’s eyes became dangerously still.
“Explain.”
“There are eleven seconds missing between the service corridor camera and the basement landing. The system log says the footage was manually overwritten.”
“Who has access?”
“Security supervisors. The general manager. And you.”
Brenda was general manager.
Alexander glanced at me.
“She planned this.”
I hugged Paige closer.
“What was supposed to happen during those eleven seconds?”
He did not answer.
He rewound the recording and played it again.
Brenda entered the frame carrying Paige.
She walked with confidence, not panic. She knew exactly where the camera was. She kept her cap low and turned her bracelet inward, but the silver caught the light when Paige moved.
Then Brenda disappeared around the corner.
Eleven seconds vanished.
The next camera showed Paige alone on the last basement step.
Brenda was gone.
Alexander entered the corridor thirty-seven seconds later, stopped when he saw the baby, and lifted her.
“What is behind that corner?” I asked.
“A maintenance passage.”
“Where does it lead?”
“The alley, the old wine cellar, and the freight elevator.”
My mouth went dry.
“So someone else could have been waiting there.”
“Yes.”
Alexander called security again.
“Seal the freight elevator and the alley exit. Search the old cellar.”
The answer came immediately.
“The cellar door is open, sir.”
Alexander reached beneath his desk and withdrew a small black case.
He opened it.
Inside was a handgun.
I stood so fast the chair scraped the floor.
“What are you doing?”
“Staying alive.”
He checked the magazine with calm familiarity.
Paige woke and began to cry.
The sound cut through the room.
Alexander’s face changed again.
He put the weapon back into the case and closed it.
Then he took a step away, as though he did not want my daughter to see it.
“I’m not taking you into the cellar,” he said. “You’ll remain here with a guard.”
“No.”
His eyebrows lifted.
“No?”
“My baby was brought into this basement. Someone may have been waiting for her. Brenda knows something about Daniel. I’m not sitting in a chair while everyone else decides what I’m allowed to know.”
“This is not bravery. It is recklessness.”
“I hid my daughter in a storage room because I had no money and no help. I’m already reckless.”
His jaw tightened.
“You are also exhausted and terrified.”
“That doesn’t make me wrong.”
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then Paige reached toward him.
Alexander looked at her tiny open hand.
Something almost like shock crossed his face.
Paige made an impatient sound.
He extended one finger.
She wrapped her hand around it.
His expression emptied.
Not became cold.
Emptied.
As though every defense inside him had disappeared at once.
Then he gently pulled away.
“You’ll stay behind me,” he said.
We left the office with two security guards.
The basement corridor smelled of stone, old wood, and expensive wine. Dim wall lamps cast long shadows across the floor.
At the end of the hall stood the last step where Alexander had found Paige.
Beside it was a narrow door painted the same gray as the wall.
The maintenance passage.
The lock had been broken.
One guard opened it.
A cold draft moved through the corridor.
