I BROUGHT MY BABY TO WORK, THEN FOUND THE CITY’S MOST FEARED BOSS HOLDING HER IN SECRET
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE BABY WHO VANISHED BEHIND THE FORBIDDEN BASEMENT DOOR

843 words

“A mother who hides her baby among boxes doesn’t deserve to keep her job,” Brenda, the manager, said, pointing at my uniform.

“As soon as Mr. Remington comes upstairs, you’re fired.”

I couldn’t answer. My 8-month-old daughter had disappeared from the small storage room where I had left her sleeping, and the only open door at the end of the hallway was the one nobody, absolutely nobody, was allowed to enter.

My name is Hannah Albright. I’m 27 years old, and I work as a waitress at The Grandview, a luxury restaurant in San Mateo where a single drink costs more than what I used to spend on groceries for an entire week. That Tuesday, Mrs. Gable, my neighbor and the only person I trusted to watch Paige, woke up with dangerously high bl00d pressure. I called four people. One didn’t answer, another asked for 90 dollars for a few hours, and the others said they couldn’t help.

I had only 183 dollars in my bank account, my rent was due in

five days, and I had already been late twice. Missing work meant losing my job.

So I wrapped Paige in her pink blanket, packed milk, diapers, and a rattle into her bag, and entered through the delivery entrance before the afternoon service began. I prepared a clean corner inside the linen storage room, away from chemicals and heavy utensils. It wasn’t dignified, it wasn’t safe, and it wasn’t what any mother dreams of for her child. But it was the only option I could see.

I checked on her at 3:20 and again at 4:05. She was sleeping peacefully. At 5:10, I found the blanket on the floor and the door wide open.

I felt my heart stop.

I searched behind the kitchen, around the staff bathrooms, and near the walk-in cooler. Then I saw the dark wooden door leading to Alexander Remington’s private basement, the restaurant’s owner and one

of the most feared businessmen in the city. People said he never forgave betrayal, that he could shut down businesses with a single phone call, and that nobody had ever entered his office without an invitation.

I went downstairs trembling.

The door was slightly open. Inside, Alexander was sitting in a leather armchair, perfectly still, with Paige asleep against his chest. One of his hands supported my daughter’s back with a gentleness that didn’t fit the cold man everyone knew. His eyes were closed, and there was a strange, almost pained expression on his face, as if for the first time in years, he had stopped fighting something inside himself.

When he opened his eyes, I thought he was going to call security.

“I found her on the last step,” he said quietly. “She didn’t cry. She just looked at me and lifted her arms.”

I explained everything in a

rush. I apologized. I told him I would accept being fired.

“Sit down before you collapse,” he ordered.

At that moment, Brenda came downstairs with two security guards. When she saw Paige, she smiled with a satisfaction that sent a chill through me.

“I knew this woman was dangerous,” she said. “I already notified the baby’s father.”

Alexander looked up.

“How do you know who the father is?”

Brenda went pale.

And that was when I realized Paige’s disappearance might not have been an accident.

“I think,” Alexander said quietly, “your daughter was never the real target.”

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The security guard still stood between Brenda and the door, one hand hovering near the radio clipped to his shoulder. The second guard watched the frozen image on the monitor: a woman in a catering jacket carrying my baby through the service corridor, the silver bracelet on her wrist catching the light.

B.G.

Brenda Gable.

My mother-in-law.

My manager.

The woman who had spent the last year telling me I should be grateful she had convinced Alexander Remington to hire me.

Brenda turned toward me, and the fear in her face hardened into something uglier.

“You don’t understand what you’re looking at,” she said.

“I understand enough,” I whispered.

Paige stirred in Alexander’s arms.

His entire posture changed at once. The feared businessman, the man who could reduce senior employees to silence with a glance, lowered his voice and gently patted my daughter’s back.

“It’s all right,” he murmured.

Paige settled again.

I stared at him.

There was something practiced in the way he held her. Something almost instinctive.

Brenda noticed it too.

Her eyes narrowed.

Alexander handed Paige to me with careful reluctance, as though returning something precious he did not trust the world to protect.

Then he looked at the guards.

“Take Ms. Gable upstairs. Keep her in the private dining room. No phone. No visitors.”

Brenda stepped backward.

“You can’t detain me.”

“I can prevent an employee from leaving private property while security investigates the removal of an infant from a staff area.”

“You’ll regret humiliating me.”

Alexander’s expression did not change.

“I regret not checking your background more carefully.”

That silenced her.
