PART 2 — THE GIFT HE CHOSE TO HUMILIATE

That night—the night everything broke—it started with a gift.

A small wooden box, wrapped in brown paper. Inside it, Thomas’s compass. The one thing I had kept all these years, through every move, every loss, every victory. I hadn’t given it to Adrian before because I wanted him to understand its meaning before he held it.

I suppose I misjudged the timing.

He unwrapped it quickly, almost impatiently, like someone opening something they already expected to be disappointed by. When he saw it, his expression didn’t soften. It tightened.

“This?” he said, holding it up between two fingers. “This is what you bring to a night like this?”

There were people watching. Investors, friends, people whose approval he valued more than anything.

“It belonged to your father,” I said, my voice steady. “He carried it when he—”

“I don’t care what he carried,” Adrian snapped, cutting me off. “Do you have any idea how this looks?”

Lydia let out

a soft laugh, not loud, but deliberate enough to be heard.

“It’s… quaint,” she added.

That word—quaint—landed heavier than it should have.

“I thought you might appreciate it,” I said quietly.

He set the box down harder than necessary, the compass slipping out and spinning slightly on the glass table.

“I’m tired of this,” he said, his voice rising just enough to pull everyone’s attention. “You show up here acting like you’re still… relevant. Like this place has anything to do with you anymore.”

And that’s when I said it.

Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just truthfully.

“Be careful not to forget who built the ground you’re standing on.”

Something in his expression shifted. Not guilt. Not reflection.

Challenge.

And then he stood up.

The first shove came fast, almost instinctive. I stumbled back slightly, more surprised than hurt. But surprise doesn’t last long when reality decides to arrive all at

once.

The first strike followed.

And then the counting began.
