Chapter 2

The caller ID displayed a name I hadn't expected to see.
Ruben.
For a brief second, I considered ignoring it.
Instead, I answered.
“Ethan,” the old cashier said without greeting, “don't tell anyone where the ticket is. Someone came back asking about you. They knew exactly when you bought it.”
A chill ran through me.
“How could they know?”
“I don't know,” Ruben replied. “But they weren't asking like curious people. They were asking like hunters.”
I thanked him and ended the call.
Inside Mariana's office, laughter suddenly stopped.
I quietly activated the voice recorder on my phone before pushing the door open.
Mariana's smile froze the instant she saw me.
“Ethan!” she exclaimed. “You're... here?”
Rodrigo stepped back so quickly that he nearly knocked over a leather chair.
I forced a smile.
“I thought I'd surprise my wife.”
I handed Mariana the bouquet.
“For you.”
Her trembling hands accepted the flowers while her eyes kept darting toward Rodrigo.
“The SUV
outside is yours too,” I added.
“The pink one?”
She blinked in disbelief.
“And this.”
I placed the velvet jewelry box in front of her.
Inside sat the largest diamond ring I had ever purchased.
Every employee standing outside the glass walls gasped.
For one brief moment, Mariana looked genuinely emotional.
Then I noticed something.
Rodrigo wasn't looking at the ring.
He was staring at the shopping bag still hanging from my wrist.
More specifically...
At the envelope inside it.
The envelope containing the preliminary trust documents my attorneys had prepared only an hour earlier.
“So,” Rodrigo said with an unusually casual smile, “did something good happen today?”
I laughed softly.
“You could say that.”
Mariana immediately wrapped both arms around me.
“I knew today would finally change our lives.”
The words sounded affectionate.
But they felt rehearsed.
As she hugged me, I felt her fingers quietly sliding into my
jacket pocket.
Searching.
Not for my wallet.
Not for my phone.
For the lottery ticket.
She didn't know it was already locked inside a bank safety deposit box.
I smiled without reacting.
Because at that exact moment, another notification appeared on my phone.
It wasn't from my lawyer.
It wasn't from my bank.
It was from my home security system.
Front door opened. Unauthorized access detected.
Someone had just entered our house...
Using Mariana's personal security code.
