I WON FOUR MILLION DOLLARS, THEN OVERHEARD MY WIFE PLANNING TO LEAVE ME THAT SAME DAY
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE LOTTERY TICKET THAT TURNED MY ORDINARY DAY INTO A DREAM

637 words

“If today doesn't go your way, son, at least buy yourself a lottery ticket.

You look like life owes you a break.”

Those were the words an elderly cashier named Ruben said to me at a small gas station just outside northern Virginia.

I'd just finished a grueling twenty-four-hour consulting assignment for a medical logistics company.

My shirt was wrinkled.

I smelled like stale coffee.

All I wanted was gas, a bottle of water, and a few hours of sleep.

Ruben was in his sixties, with silver hair, weathered hands, and the kind of calm smile that only comes from surviving life's hardest seasons.

“I never play the lottery,” I replied.

“Then don't think of it as gambling,” he chuckled, sliding a ticket across the counter. “Think of it as giving luck one chance to find you.”

I have no idea why I bought it.

Maybe I was too exhausted to argue.

Maybe destiny sometimes arrives disguised as an ordinary conversation.

I slipped the

ticket into my jacket pocket and drove away.

Around one o'clock that afternoon, while stuck in traffic, I remembered it.

Out of curiosity, I scanned it using the official lottery app.

The screen loaded for a few seconds.

Then one message appeared.

Grand Prize Winner.

I stared at it.

Scanned it again.

Then again.

Each time, the result stayed exactly the same.

My hands began shaking.

The traffic, the horns, the construction crews outside my window...

Everything faded into the background.

I turned the car around and drove straight back to the gas station.

Ruben checked the numbers twice.

When he looked back at me, every trace of humor had disappeared.

“Son,” he said quietly, “starting today... be careful who you trust.”

I didn't realize how important those words would become.

Within hours I was sitting in a conference room with financial advisers, tax attorneys, and estate planners discussing trusts,

privacy, and protecting sudden wealth.

I listened politely.

But my mind was somewhere else.

It was with my wife, Mariana.

We had met eight years earlier in a coffee shop.

She corrected my pronunciation of an Italian artist's name.

I laughed.

She laughed harder.

And somehow that conversation became the beginning of our love story.

Three years later, we were married.

I loved her without hesitation.

So instead of calling to tell her the news, I decided to surprise her.

First, I bought the designer handbag she'd admired months earlier but refused to purchase for herself.

Then I ordered two hundred pink roses—her favorite flowers.

Finally, I purchased the bright pink luxury SUV she'd once jokingly called her “dream car.”

The dealership delivered it to the headquarters of Vithera Logistics, where Mariana worked as Director of Corporate Relations.

When I arrived that afternoon, employees had gathered outside, admiring the eye-catching

vehicle.

Carrying the roses in one hand and the shopping bags in the other, I walked confidently into the building, believing I was about to give my wife the happiest surprise of her life.

Then something felt... wrong.

People weren't looking at the flowers.

They weren't admiring the SUV anymore.

Instead, several employees were staring toward the executive offices.

A receptionist quickly looked away the moment she saw me.

I continued down the hallway.

Just before reaching Mariana's office, I heard a man's laughter.

Then I heard her voice.

“Relax, Rodrigo. Ethan still believes I'm completely devoted to him.”

I stopped walking.

Rodrigo Santillan.

The company's Vice President of Operations.

The same man Mariana had always described as arrogant and impossible to tolerate.

His voice answered calmly.

“After today... you won't need him anymore.”

Silence followed.

Then...

The unmistakable sound of a kiss.

I remained perfectly still.

At that exact moment, my phone began to ring.

One unexpected call was about to destroy every plan they thought they had carefully put into motion.
