A single mistake cost Layla Bennett everything.
Chapter 1
A single mistake cost Layla Bennett everything.
The twenty-three-year-old maid stood inside Dominic Gallo’s private office, gripping the handle of her cleaning cart while the Chicago skyline glittered beyond the penthouse windows. Dominic sat behind a massive mahogany desk, signing contracts with the same cold precision he used to control both his real-estate empire and the criminal organization hidden beneath it.
To the public, Dominic was a billionaire developer.
To the men who feared him, he was the head of the Gallo syndicate.
To Layla, he was the father of the secret she had carried for three months.
She had never told him what happened at the syndicate’s masquerade gala. That night, ordered to work as a masked server, Layla had escaped into the private library for a moment of silence. Dominic had found her there, drunk, furious over a possible war with the Moretti family, and unable to recognize the quiet maid behind the gilded Venetian
mask.
For one reckless night, he had wanted her.
Before dawn, Layla fled with her silver bird-shaped locket missing and a memory she could never erase. Weeks later, a doctor confirmed she was pregnant.
Now nausea rose violently through her.
“Are you going to polish that tray,” Dominic asked without looking up, “or stand there breathing my air?”
Layla swallowed hard. “I’m sorry, Mr. Gallo.”
She lifted the antique silver tray. The room tilted. Her heel caught the edge of the Persian rug, and the tray crashed onto the marble floor. A crystal decanter shattered beside it, spilling whiskey across the carpet and over the shoes of Celeste Rossi, Dominic’s elegant fiancée.
Celeste stared down in disgust.
“Watch what you’re doing, you clumsy idiot.”
Layla dropped to her knees. “I became dizzy. I’ll clean everything.”
“Dizzy?” Celeste’s lips curled. “Dominic, why do you employ addicts from the street? She’s pale,
shaking, and smells like cheap soap.”
Layla’s eyes burned with humiliation. “I’m not an addict.”
Dominic rose slowly and came around the desk. His dark gaze moved over the broken glass, then settled on Layla.
“This is the second time this week you’ve failed to perform.”
“I’ve been unwell,” she whispered. “Please, I need this job. My father’s hospital debt—”
“I do not pay you to feel well. I pay you to be flawless.”
Celeste folded her arms. “Throw her out, Dom.”
Dominic removed several hundred-dollar bills from a money clip and dropped them beside the shattered glass.
“Take the severance. Collect your belongings.”
Layla stared at the money. One hand moved instinctively toward her abdomen.
She wanted to tell him.
She wanted to say that the woman he had searched for since the gala had been standing inside his home every day. She wanted him to know that he
was throwing his own unborn children into the street.
Then she saw Celeste’s triumphant smile.
Dominic was powerful enough to take the babies from her. He could place them inside his violent world and erase Layla as easily as he erased every other inconvenience.
“If you are still on my property in thirty minutes,” Dominic said, turning away, “my men will remove you.”
Layla gathered the money with shaking fingers and left without revealing the truth.
Four months passed.
Winter buried Chicago beneath dirty snow. Layla disappeared into a deteriorating apartment in Pilsen and worked nights at a twenty-four-hour diner while her pregnancy grew impossible to hide.
Dominic remained in his penthouse, increasingly haunted by the woman from the masquerade. The only proof she had existed was the tarnished bird-shaped locket he found in the library.
One night, he watched the gala’s security footage again.
The masked woman slipped from the library and entered the servants’ corridor. Twenty minutes later, Layla Bennett emerged from the staff locker room, hastily adjusting her maid’s uniform.
A silver chain hung from her neck.
Dominic froze the image.
The locket was shaped like a bird.
His whiskey glass fell and shattered.
“Matteo,” he said, his voice suddenly deadly. “Find Layla Bennett.”
He rose so fast his chair struck the wall.
“Tear this city apart if you have to.”
