Chapter 2

His father encouraged that attitude without ever needing to say it directly.
Richard Caldwell owned commercial properties throughout the county and seemed to have his name on every donor wall, youth program, and charity banner in town.
That evening, his name was printed across the largest sponsor sign inside the tent.
When Ethan challenged me, Richard stood near the dessert table with one hand in his pocket.
He laughed.
Not cruelly.
Confidently.
The laugh of a father who thought his son had just created a little harmless entertainment.
Ethan tapped the envelope.
“Ten grand.”
I stood.
The crowd quieted.
“Keep your money.”
His smile widened.
“Scared?”
“No.”
“Then get on the mat.”
“I’m not interested in proving anything to you.”
For a second, something flashed across his face.
Then he turned slightly so the crowd could see him.
“Then walk away.”
That was when I understood what he actually wanted.
This wasn’t about finding out whether I knew how to grapple.
He
wanted an audience to watch the quiet new neighbor back down.
He had turned me into a supporting character in a story about himself.
I looked at the envelope.
Then at him.
“Fine.”
Denise whispered my name.
I raised one finger.
“But we do it under Carlos’s rules. Controlled grappling only. No striking. He stops it whenever he decides it’s over.”
Carlos Mendes, the instructor who ran Ethan’s gym downtown, looked up from the edge of the mats.
Ethan shrugged.
“Whatever you need.”
“And the ten thousand goes to the veterans fund if you lose.”
That wiped the grin from his face for half a second.
Richard straightened beside the dessert table.
Someone behind me whispered, “Did she just say yes?”
Ethan recovered quickly.
“Deal.”

A few more worlds to get lost in after this chapter.
After six childless years, my husband left me, cut off every kind of financial support, and walked away knowing I had almost nothing left. Then the quiet former sheriff living across the road offered me something I never saw coming. Six months later, I was pregnant with twins and receiving care from some of the most respected doctors in the country. But what truly drained the color from my ex-husband’s face was learning the truth about who the “lonely sheriff” actually was.
