Chapter 2

The first thing Major Bishop did was not ask questions.
He already knew there was no time for them. Within twenty minutes of my call, the forgotten shadows of Task Force Vanguard began moving again. Names that had disappeared from every database started appearing on encrypted screens across the world. Men who had lived ordinary lives for nearly two decades opened locked cases they had sworn never to touch again.
I stood beside Nora’s hospital bed, watching the machines keep her stable. Her eyes remained closed, but her hand still held mine.
“Daddy is going to fix this,” I whispered.
But deep inside, I knew fixing it would not be enough.
Someone had tried to erase my daughter’s pain because they believed money could bury anything. They forgot one thing: some ghosts cannot be buried.
At 3:15 a.m., Bishop sent me the first report.
The attack wasn’t random.
The three boys had done this before.
There were other victims. Other
families who had been pressured into silence. Complaints vanished. Witnesses changed their stories. Security footage disappeared before investigators ever saw it.
The names on the paper were only the beginning.
“They built a machine,” Bishop said through the phone. “A machine that protects them.”
I looked at Nora’s broken face and felt something inside me harden.
“Then we dismantle the machine.”
By sunrise, Vanguard had uncovered something nobody expected.
The university’s security system had not malfunctioned that night.
It had been remotely disabled from inside the administration building.
And the person who accessed it was not one of the boys.
It was someone with authority.
Someone trusted.
Someone who knew exactly how to hide a crime.
Then Bishop sent me a final file.
A photograph.
I stared at the screen, unable to breathe.
The person standing beside Chad Kensington, laughing just hours before the attack, was someone I knew.
Someone
from my own past.
Someone who should have been impossible to find.
The message below the image contained only six words:
“Commander, your enemy is awake.”
I looked back at Nora.
The war I had buried for nineteen years had just found me again.
And this time, it was personal.
