Chapter 1
“That boy isn't sitting at this table until he learns where he belongs!”
The words came from the kitchen just as Clarissa pushed open the front door of the country house with her shoulder.
She was carrying two heavy grocery bags filled with meat, cheese, fruit, and yogurt.
She had been given Friday off after covering extra shifts at work and decided to surprise her son and her husband's family.
She didn't tell anyone she was coming.
That's why she saw something they never would have dared do in front of her.
At the dining table sat her mother-in-law, Alana, her sister-in-law, Ellie, and Ellie's son, Mason.
In front of them were plates piled high with fried chicken, warm rice, soft bread rolls, cheese, and the sweet chocolates Clarissa herself had bought.
Across the room, sitting alone on an old worn-out armchair, was her seven-year-old son, Dustin.
His head was lowered.
In his hands was a plastic plate holding nothing but a cold boiled potato, cut in half.
No butter.
No salt.
Nothing.
Clarissa felt the blood drain from her face.
Dustin looked up
and saw her.
Instead of running into her arms, he quickly hid the plate behind his back.
That single gesture hurt more than any explanation ever could.
Alana jumped to her feet.
“Oh, Clarissa! We weren't expecting you. Why didn't you call? We would have helped you carry the groceries.”
Ellie quietly set her phone down on the table.
Mason kept chewing on a fried chicken drumstick without even looking up.
Clarissa walked over to her son, knelt in front of him, and gently took the plate from his hands.
The potato was hard and covered with a pale, dried film.
“Why is he eating over here?” she asked calmly. “And why are all of you eating fried chicken while he's eating this?”
A heavy silence filled the room.
“He's being punished,” Alana answered. “He trampled my flowers, played with toys that weren't his, and kept slamming doors. He needs
discipline.”
Dustin pressed his lips together.
“I didn't step on the flowers, Mom. My ball rolled into the garden. Grandma Alana said I was a burden and she didn't want to look at me while they were eating.”
“What a liar!” Alana snapped. “Listen to the stories he makes up.”
Clarissa turned toward Mason.
“Was he punished too?”
Ellie let out a dry laugh.
“My son knows how to behave. Dustin is always causing trouble. Besides, Mom is doing you a favor by watching him. You should be thanking her.”
Two weeks earlier, Alana had insisted on taking care of Dustin for the entire summer.
Clarissa had stocked both refrigerators with food, left plenty of spending money, and even bought games for both boys.
Now she understood who all of it had really been for.
She picked up the plate, dumped the potato into the trash, and placed the empty
dish in the sink.
“You have two hours to pack your things.”
Alana went pale.
“What did you just say?”
“I said you're leaving. The train to Columbus departs at 3:10. At 2:30, I'm locking this house and activating the alarm system.”
Ellie jumped to her feet so fast her chair crashed backward onto the floor.
“This house belongs to Parker too! You can't throw us out!”
“I bought this house five years before I married him. It's in my name.”
Ellie pointed at Dustin with open contempt.
“You're going to destroy your marriage because that boy didn't get a piece of fried chicken?”
Clarissa took her son's cold little hand.
“No. You destroyed it the moment you chose to humiliate my child in my own home.”
As she walked upstairs with Dustin to pack his belongings, she heard Ellie shouting that she was calling Parker, and that he would put his wife “back in her place.”
Clarissa pulled out her phone.
She knew that phone call could end her marriage.
What she didn't know was that before the day was over, she would uncover something far worse than a cold potato sitting on a plastic plate.
