MY MOTHER-IN-LAW ATE MY PARENTS' ANNIVERSARY DINNER, THEN I FOUND A SECRET BABY AND A FORGED LOAN
Chapter 3 / 4

Chapter 3

PART 3 - THE SIGNATURE SHE NEVER GAVE

1,418 words

Callie never took her eyes off Dustin.

“Please freeze the application,” she told the banker.

“We already have,” Daniel replied. “Because you're disputing authorization, our fraud department will need to contact you directly.”

“Send everything to my personal email.”

Dustin moved toward her.

“Callie, hang up.”

She ignored him.

Daniel confirmed the email address and explained that no money had been released yet.

That was the first piece of good news Callie had heard all night.

The second came seconds later.

The application had been submitted from Dustin's personal business email.

Callie thanked the banker and ended the call.

Then she slipped her phone into her pocket.

Dustin stood in front of the bedroom door.

“You're blowing this completely out of proportion.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I didn't forge anything.”

“The bank has an application with my signature that I didn't sign.”

“We're married.”

“That isn't an answer.”

Dustin exhaled sharply.

“You signed documents when we refinanced.”

“Not this one.”

“You probably forgot.”

Callie stared at him.

He actually expected her to doubt herself.

That might have worked once.

Not anymore.

She picked up her suitcase.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Move away from the door.”

“Where are you going?”

“My parents' house.”

Dustin laughed.

“Of course. Run to Daddy.”

Callie stepped closer.

“If you don't move, I'm calling the police.”

For the first time that night, Dustin looked uncertain.

Then he stepped aside.

Callie walked past him.

She was halfway to the front door when someone began pounding from the hallway.

Dustin opened it.

Gertrude rushed inside with Paige behind her.

Neither had bothered knocking properly.

“What did you tell the bank?” Gertrude demanded.

Callie stopped.

That answered another question.

Gertrude knew about the loan too.

“I disputed a fraudulent application.”

“Fraudulent?” Gertrude snapped. “Don't be ridiculous. Dustin is your husband.”

“And?”

“What belongs to you belongs to him.”

Callie looked at Paige.

Her sister-in-law wouldn't meet her eyes.

“How much did you know?”

Paige crossed her arms.

“About what?”

“Mara.”

Paige's face changed.

Gertrude immediately stepped between them.

“This is a private matter between husband and wife.”

Callie almost smiled.

“Interesting. You didn't think my marriage was private when you helped pay for his mistress's apartment.”

Gertrude's expression remained cold.

“She is carrying my grandchild.”

There it was.

No apology.

No embarrassment.

Only justification.

Callie looked at Dustin.

“You told me Paige was pregnant.”

Dustin said nothing.

Paige finally muttered, “He panicked.”

Callie let out a short laugh.

It sounded unfamiliar even to her.

Gertrude raised her chin.

“Mara didn't plan this. Dustin didn't plan it either. But there's a child involved now.”

“So you helped him hide it from me.”

“We were trying to handle the situation sensibly.”

“Sensibly?”

Callie gestured toward the phone in her hand.

“You transferred almost seventeen thousand dollars through Paige so I wouldn't recognize Mara's name. You paid her rent with our money. You bought her jewelry with our card. And now someone has tried to borrow two hundred seventy-five thousand dollars against my grandfather's property.”

Gertrude's face tightened.

“That building is sitting there doing nothing.”

“It produces rental income.”

“And Dustin needs capital.”

“For what?”

No one answered.

Callie looked from one face to another.

Then Paige finally whispered, “The house.”

Gertrude turned sharply.

“Paige.”

But the word had already escaped.

“What house?” Callie asked.

Paige swallowed.

Dustin said, “Nothing.”

Callie repeated the question.

“What house?”

Paige looked furious now, but not at Callie.

At Dustin.

“You told me she knew you were planning to buy it after the divorce.”

Gertrude closed her eyes.

Dustin swore.

Callie felt something cold settle inside her.

“Buy what after the divorce?”

Paige folded her arms defensively.

“A house in Brookfield.”

Callie knew the neighborhood.

Large homes.

Excellent schools.

Family-sized yards.

Exactly the sort of place Dustin had told Callie they could never afford.

“For Mara?”

Paige didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Callie slowly lowered her suitcase.

Not because she had changed her mind about leaving.

Because she wanted to understand the entire scheme before she walked out.

“When were you planning to divorce me?”

Dustin rubbed his forehead.

“This conversation isn't productive.”

“When?”

Gertrude answered instead.

“After the loan closed.”

Callie stared at her.

Even Dustin looked shocked that his mother had admitted it.

Gertrude continued as though discussing a business transaction.

“The property would have been leveraged while it was still marital collateral. Dustin could use the funds for the down payment, then your attorneys could sort out the rest.”

“My attorneys?”

“You have a career. You'll survive.”

Callie couldn't believe the casual cruelty of it.

Gertrude had sat at Callie's dining table less than five hours earlier and devoured the anniversary dinner meant for Callie's parents.

Then she had mocked them for arriving late.

All while knowing her son planned to take Callie's inheritance, buy another woman a house, and file for divorce.

“Did you hate me this entire time?” Callie asked.

Gertrude looked almost offended.

“This isn't about hate.”

“Then what is it about?”

“My son deserves a family.”

Callie stopped breathing for a second.

Dustin looked away.

There it was.

The deepest wound.

Callie and Dustin had struggled for two years to conceive.

Doctors had found no clear cause.

Every appointment had been painful.

Every negative test had been worse.

And Gertrude knew.

She had hugged Callie after one failed treatment and told her not to give up.

Now she stood in Callie's home and used that grief to justify Dustin's affair.

“Mara can give him a child,” Gertrude said.

Callie whispered, “So that made me disposable.”

Nobody answered.

Then something unexpected happened.

Paige began crying.

Gertrude snapped, “Stop it.”

But Paige looked at Callie.

“I didn't know about the signature.”

Dustin glared at her.

“Paige.”

“I didn't.”

She wiped her face.

“I knew about Mara. I knew about the apartment and the house. Dustin told me the divorce was already agreed on. He said you were waiting until after tax season.”

Callie looked at Dustin.

“You told your sister I agreed to the divorce?”

He shrugged.

“It made things easier.”

Paige continued.

“He asked me to receive the transfers because he said Mara's name couldn't appear on the statements until the paperwork was done.”

Gertrude interrupted.

“That's enough.”

“No,” Paige replied, surprising everyone. “It isn't.”

She turned back to Callie.

“The loan wasn't Dustin's first plan.”

Callie's stomach tightened.

“What was?”

Paige hesitated.

Then she said four words that changed everything.

“Selling your grandfather's building.”

Dustin moved toward her.

“Shut up.”

Paige stepped back.

“You lied to me too.”

“What do you mean selling it?” Callie demanded.

Paige pulled out her phone.

“Dustin had a broker evaluate it two months ago.”

Callie felt the blood drain from her face.

“He couldn't sell it without me.”

“He said there was already a buyer.”

Paige scrolled through her messages and held up the screen.

There was a photograph.

Callie's commercial building.

Below it was a message from Dustin.

Buyer will pay 910k, once Callie signs the final authorization we're done.

Callie stared at the date.

Six weeks earlier.

The same week Dustin had persuaded her to add his name to the deed.

He had already found a buyer before asking her.

This hadn't been an affair that accidentally turned into financial betrayal.

The financial betrayal had been planned.

Callie's phone rang again.

Daniel Reeves.

She answered immediately.

“Mrs. Whitmore, our fraud team reviewed the submission metadata.”

Callie put the call on speaker.

Dustin's face went pale.

Daniel continued.

“The electronic signature on your authorization was copied from a previous document stored in the application account.”

Nobody moved.

“We also found that the identity verification image submitted with the loan appears to be a photograph of a photocopy rather than a live verification.”

Callie looked directly at Dustin.

“So someone forged both.”

Daniel paused carefully.

“That is what our investigation will need to determine.”

Callie's eyes moved toward the desk in the living room.

The drawer where she kept copies of her driver's license.

The drawer Dustin had access to every day.

Gertrude suddenly grabbed her purse.

“We're leaving.”

“No,” Callie said.

Gertrude froze.

“You wanted this to be a family matter.”

Callie lifted her phone.

“Now we're going to handle it as one.”

She dialed another number.

Dustin's voice cracked.

“Who are you calling?”

Callie looked at him.

“My attorney.”

Then she smiled for the first time that night.

“And tomorrow morning, I'm calling the police.”
