MY MOTHER-IN-LAW ATE MY PARENTS' ANNIVERSARY DINNER, THEN I FOUND A SECRET BABY AND A FORGED LOAN
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE DINNER THEY ATE BEFORE MY PARENTS ARRIVED

665 words

“Well, we didn't expect your parents to be so late,” Gertrude said with a smug smile, pointing at the empty serving trays.

“If they'd arrived on time, there would've still been something left for them.”

Callie felt her bl00d run cold.

She had spent the entire afternoon cooking to celebrate her parents' thirty-fifth wedding anniversary. In the small apartment she shared with her husband, she had prepared marinated roast pork, rosemary potatoes, apple salad, poblano cream soup, and a three-milk cake topped with fresh strawberries. She had even taken out the fine dinnerware her parents had given her when she and Dustin got married.

Dinner was supposed to begin at seven.

But at 6:00 p.m., Gertrude, her mother-in-law, and Paige, Dustin's younger sister, showed up unexpectedly.

“We came to help,” Gertrude announced as she walked in without waiting for an invitation.

Callie knew exactly what that kind of “help” meant.

Gertrude inspected the dining table, criticized a wrinkle in the tablecloth, and complained that the apple salad had too much dressing. Paige

went straight into the kitchen, cut herself a slice of cake, and tasted it with the expression of a food critic.

“It's good,” she said, “although my mom's is much moister.”

Dustin heard the comment and smiled as though nothing about it was offensive.

“Just let them be, honey. You know how they are.”

She had heard that sentence for years. It was his easiest excuse for never standing up for her.

At 6:40 p.m., Callie's parents called.

There had been a traffic accident on the highway, and they would be almost an hour late.

When Dustin shared the news, Gertrude settled comfortably into the seat at the head of the table.

“Perfect,” she said. “Then serve us. We're not going to starve waiting around for people who can't be on time.”

“This dinner is for my parents,” Callie replied.

“We're family too,” Paige sh0t back, tearing off a piece

of the roast pork with her fingers and stuffing it into her mouth.

Dustin avoided his wife's eyes.

“Callie, don't make a big deal out of it. We'll eat a little and leave some for them.”

They left nothing.

Gertrude served the best cuts of meat to herself, Dustin, and Paige. They finished the potatoes, the salad, the bread, and nearly the entire cake.

Callie sat there with an empty plate, silently watching the meal she had spent hours preparing disappear.

When she finally stood to wash the dishes, Dustin followed her into the kitchen.

“Don't turn this into drama,” he said. “We'll buy something else tomorrow.”

“This isn't about the food, Dustin. It's about the disrespect.”

“My mom wasn't trying to in:sult you.”

“She humiliated my parents before they even got here, and you helped her do it.”

Dustin grabbed her arm so tightly that it hurt.

“Don't ever

talk about my family like that again.”

Callie looked down at the red marks his fingers had left on her skin.

Something inside her broke without making a sound.

Twenty minutes later, she returned to the dining room calm and composed, her phone in her hand.

At exactly eight o'clock, the doorbell rang.

Her parents walked in carrying flowers and a box of chocolates. When they saw the dining table covered with dirty, empty dishes, they smiled awkwardly.

Then Gertrude delivered the final in:sult.

“If you check the refrigerator,” she sneered, “I think there's half a cucumber left.”

Callie's father clenched his fists.

Callie simply smiled.

She opened a food delivery app, selected one of the most expensive restaurants in the city, and ordered three complete dinners: ribeye steaks, truffle risotto, gourmet salads, decadent desserts, and an expensive bottle of wine.

“How many meals?” the operator asked.

Callie looked at her husband, her mother-in-law, and Paige.

“For three,” she answered. “Only for my parents and me.”

Dustin watched as she paid with their shared credit card.

His left eye began to twitch.

None of them had any idea what Callie had just decided...
