MY HUSBAND DROVE US INTO THE RIVER, THEN MY PARALYZED BROTHER STOOD UP
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE RIVER TRAP THAT EXPOSED MY HUSBAND’S DEADLY BETRAYAL

799 words

“Don’t try to open the door, Rosalind.

It’s already too late for you.”

Those were the last words I heard from my husband before I watched him climb out through the car window and leave us behind in the middle of the river.

Everything happened within seconds.

Garrett was driving along the coastal road toward Savannah Creek. My brother Tobias was in the back, sitting in the wheelchair he had used ever since the accident that killed our parents fifteen years earlier.

Suddenly, Garrett lost control.

Or so I thought.

The SUV crashed through the barrier and plunged into the water.

The impact left me dazed. When I came to, the water was already covering my ankles.

“Garrett! The door won’t open!”

He didn’t answer.

I watched him calmly unfasten his seat belt, lower the window, and swim out.

“Tobias is in the back!” I screamed.

He didn’t even turn around.

I tried to release my own

seat belt.

The buckle was jammed.

I reached underneath the seat and felt something metallic.

A wire.

Someone had tied my seat belt to the frame.

That was when I realized this wasn’t an accident.

The water reached my chest.

I looked through the window and saw Garrett reaching the shore.

But he wasn’t alone.

A woman was waiting for him under an umbrella.

It was Penelope.

My half sister.

And she was pregnant.

I watched as Garrett hugged her. She touched his face, and then they both looked toward the SUV as it slowly disappeared beneath the water.

My husband even smiled.

Three years of marriage.

Three years of him telling me I was the love of his life.

Every night, he made me warm milk because, according to him, I worked too hard managing part of the shipyard my family had founded in Baltimore.

And now he was

calmly watching me die.

“Rosalind…”

Tobias’s voice came from behind me.

I turned around, crying.

The water was almost covering his face.

My brother had been unable to move his legs for fifteen years.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I was the one who brought this man into our family.”

I closed my eyes.

Then I felt a blow behind me.

Then another.

I opened my eyes.

Tobias was no longer sitting down.

He was standing inside the SUV.

Standing.

On both legs.

He pulled out a small cutting tool he had hidden beneath his jacket and cut through the wire holding my seat belt.

I froze.

“Your legs…?”

“I’ll explain later.”

He kicked the rear door just as the pressure began to equalize. He managed to open it and pulled me outside.

I tried to swim toward the surface.

Tobias grabbed me.

“No.”

“We’re going to drown!”

He pressed a

small emergency breathing mouthpiece into my hand. It had been hidden inside a waterproof pouch.

“Garrett is watching from the shore,” he said. “If he knows you survived, he’ll try again.”

We swam beneath an old pier until we reached a maintenance gap between enormous concrete pillars, hidden from the road.

When I could finally breathe, I shoved Tobias against the wall.

“Fifteen years! You’ve spent fifteen years pretending you couldn’t walk!”

He didn’t defend himself.

He only said:

“Because our parents’ accident wasn’t an accident either.”

I felt as if the world had sunk all over again.

“What are you saying?”

Tobias stared directly at me.

“Garrett’s family has been trying to take control of the shipyard for fifteen years. He never married you for love.”

Then he added something that chilled me more than the river water:

“Today he wasn’t just trying to kill you because of what you own. He was finishing a job his father started with Mom and Dad.”

That night, I realized my entire marriage could have been a lie.

But I still didn’t know that the worst part wasn’t that Garrett had tried to drown me.

The worst part was discovering what he had been putting into my body for three years without me knowing.

I couldn’t believe what I was about to hear…

The phone continued to vibrate in my trembling hand.

For a few seconds, neither Tobias nor I moved.

The abandoned maintenance room beneath the old pier was silent except for the distant sound of waves hitting the concrete pillars above us.

Then the message appeared.

“The person helping Garrett was never Penelope.”

My breath caught.

Another message followed.

“You have been trusting the wrong person for three years.”

I stared at the screen.

“No,” I whispered.

Tobias noticed my expression.

“What is it?”

I slowly turned the phone toward him.

For the first time that night, I saw genuine fear cross my brother’s face.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“That number…” Tobias said quietly.

“You know it?”

He didn’t answer immediately.
