Chapter 2

Isaac smiled as if he'd already won.
Heather kept stuffing my clothes into cardboard boxes while my mother-in-law criticized every piece of furniture I had ever bought.
Carlton walked through the living room, pointing at paintings and decorations, deciding which ones would stay with "the family."
I remained perfectly still.
Wayne's folded note felt heavy inside my pocket.
The moment no one was looking, I slipped into the downstairs bathroom and unfolded it.
There was only one phone number.
Underneath it, four handwritten words.
Trust no one else.
I stared at them for several seconds before dialing.
The call connected almost instantly.
A calm male voice answered.
"Holden speaking."
"My name is Emily... Wayne told me to call."
Silence.
Then Holden quietly said, "I've been waiting for you."
My pulse quickened.
"Your husband didn't just steal your savings."
"He and Sarah have been running the same scheme for nearly three years."
"What are you talking about?"
"They've
used forged signatures, shell companies, and stolen identities."
I leaned against the sink.
"I have proof."
Before I could ask another question, Holden continued.
"My wife is Sarah."
Everything inside me froze.
"So... you're her husband?"
"For now."
His voice carried no anger.
Only exhaustion.
"I discovered everything six months ago."
"I hired forensic accountants instead of confronting her."
"They've documented every transfer."
My breathing became shallow.
"Why help me?"
"Because you're not their first victim."
"And unless someone stops them..."
"You won't be the last."
A loud knock echoed outside the bathroom door.
"Heather!"
My mother-in-law shouted.
"Are you hiding in there crying?"
I muted the phone.
"I'm coming."
Holden spoke one last time before disconnecting.
"Tomorrow morning."
"Nine o'clock."
"Federal Courthouse."
"Bring every document you still have."
"And whatever happens tonight..."
"Don't sign anything."
The call ended.
When I stepped back into the living room, Isaac was already
sitting comfortably on the sofa.
He casually tossed a thick envelope onto the coffee table.
"Good timing."
"My attorney prepared one more agreement."
"If you sign it tonight, I'll even let you keep your car."
I slowly picked up the envelope.
Then I smiled for the very first time that day.
Because buried beneath the legal paperwork was a business card that definitely hadn't been there before.
Across the table, Isaac had no idea someone else had slipped it inside.
The name embossed in gold stopped my heart.
Holden Carter — Net Worth: $700 Million.
And written across the back, in black ink, were six unforgettable words.
"Just say yes. I'll handle everything."
