When I Came Home From Work, I Found All My Belongings Thrown Onto the Sidewalk by My Mother-in-Law
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - The Note on the Sidewalk

596 words

“Your clothes are downstairs.

This apartment is for my daughters now. Don't come back.”

That message was written in black marker on a sheet of paper placed on top of three boxes and two bags containing nearly seven years of my life.

My name is Camille Dupont. I'm 34 years old and an architect specializing in the restoration of historic buildings in Montreal.

That afternoon, I returned from a construction site in Le Plateau and found my belongings piled up on the sidewalk of a Victorian building in Mile End.

My mother-in-law, Genevieve, didn't even have the decency to tell me to my face.

I tried calling Gabriel, my husband.

He had blocked me.

Then I tried to pay for a taxi with our shared expenses card.

Declined.

Any other person might have cried.

I smiled.

Because they had no idea what I had signed the afternoon before.

Gabriel and I had bought that

apartment five years after getting married. He managed real estate projects. I restored old mansions.

The place had high ceilings, colorful tile floors, and a room whose wallpaper concealed a section of an old mural that I discovered during a renovation.

I photographed it, prepared a technical report, and kept it on file.

Genevieve had never liked me.

To her, I was “the architect,” never her daughter-in-law.

Her older daughter, Vivienne, was engaged to Antoine and had spent months saying she didn't want to start her marriage “renting like everyone else.”

The younger one, Charlotte, barely said anything.

The problem began when Genevieve started showing up with a measuring tape.

She measured my bedroom.

Vivienne opened closets and talked about furniture as if I no longer lived there.

“This is going to be my walk-in closet,” she said one afternoon, walking into the room with the mural.

“When I get

married, this will be my bedroom.”

Gabriel said nothing.

A week later, I came home early and heard him talking to his mother.

“Camille has rights too,” he murmured.

“Well, convince her. Vivienne needs the apartment. Besides, you owe money. Sell it, settle your debts, and stop being sentimental.”

There was a silence.

“I'll find a way to do it without causing a scene,” Gabriel replied.

I didn't walk into the kitchen.

I called Louis, a construction foreman I had worked with for years.

“If they want to tear down your house, don't wait for the machinery to arrive. Check the foundation first,” he told me.

That's exactly what I did.

Because of a previous structural inspection, I was listed as the technical professional responsible for monitoring a crack in the building.

With the help of attorney Jacqueline Mercier, I officially documented that any transaction affecting the co-ownership required my

consent while the inspection remained open.

I also signed a notarized statement denying authorization for any transfer without my approval.

And I prepared another way out.

I had bought a small apartment in Saint-Henri with my own savings.

The night before, Charlotte texted me:

“Mom says everything will be settled tomorrow. Be careful.”

Now, standing on the wet sidewalk, I folded Genevieve's note and walked upstairs.

Everyone was inside.

Vivienne was looking through catalogs.

Genevieve was drinking coffee.

Gabriel wouldn't look at me.

“You don't live here anymore,” my mother-in-law said.

I placed three documents on the table.

“And you can't sell, transfer, or change ownership of this apartment without my signature.”

Genevieve's smile disappeared.

But the worst part was hearing Charlotte from the doorway.

“Camille... my mom already has a lawyer willing to forge a donation document with an earlier date.”
