Chapter 1
My husband b:ea:t me so b:ruta:lly that I was rushed into in:tensive care, barely able to draw a full breath.
When I called my parents and begged them to let me stay with them, they simply answered, “You made your choice. Now live with it.” I whispered, “I understand.” That night, lying helpless in my hospital bed, I revoked my guarantee on the house they were preparing to purchase... and before sunrise, the perfect life they had built began falling apart.
The final thing I heard before my husband’s fist knocked the breath out of me was my mother’s voice replaying in my head: “Marriage requires sacrifice.” When I finally opened my eyes in intensive care with a tube inserted into my chest, I understood at last whose life she had always expected me to sacrifice.
My name is Charlotte Andrews. For seven years, I helped Garrett, my husband, maintain the appearance of a flawless marriage. I wore long sleeves whenever we visited his family. I blamed my b:ruis:es on
careless accidents around the house. I smiled while he interrupted my stories, controlled my bank cards, and constantly reminded me that nobody would believe a “fragile woman” over a respected real-estate developer.
That night, Garrett came home furious because I had questioned a transfer from our joint account.
“You’re checking up on my finances now?” he asked.
“I’m asking where eighty thousand dollars went.”
The smile disappeared from his face. His first blow sent me crashing against the kitchen island. The second knocked me onto the floor. When I tried crawling toward my phone, he k:icke:d my ribs until I felt something inside me c:rack.
“You have nothing without me,” he whispered.
