Chapter 1
The heavy snow absorbed Claire Bennett's shriek before it could even echo toward the highway.
Merely seconds prior, she had pleaded with her spouse, Ethan Bennett, to cease their fighting and drive them back to Denver. She was only days away from delivering her child, the bitter chill had rendered her legs completely numb, and a fierce blizzard had blanketed Mount Evans in a solid wall of white.
However, Ethan had stopped arguing.
His expression shifted to an absolute blank.
Without any prior warning, he planted both his hands on Claire's shoulders and sh0ved her straight off the edge of the precipice.
She desperately attempted to latch onto his coat, a rogue branch, absolutely anything. Instead, her fingers grasped nothing but icy wind. Her frame plummeted several yards before cr@shing into a jagged rocky ledge concealed under the deep snow.
Agony ripped through her ribcage, and her wrist was bent at a grotesque angle. Despite the severe pa!n, the very first action she took was
wrapping her arms securely around her abdomen to shield her unborn infant.
From her position below, she could just barely distinguish two silhouettes.
Ethan remained standing near the drop.
Standing next to him was Vanessa Monroe, the very woman who had spent the last few months sipping coffee with Claire, affectionately patting her pregnant stomach, and acting as her close friend while covertly engaging in a romance with her husband.
"Is she moving around?" Vanessa inquired, her tone quivering.
Ethan released a brief, cruel chuckle.
"For a payout of $900,000,000, she certainly better not be."
With that, they turned and walked off.
Neither of them bothered to glance back.
For almost two full hours, Claire lay pinned beneath the frost. Each breath scorched her lungs. The freezing temperature steadily invaded her system, and she could sense her unborn child's movements becoming increasingly faint.
"Stay right here with me, Noah," she
breathed softly. "Please... do not abandon me."
Right as the blinding darkness began to envelop her vision, a blinding beam of light panned across the snowy mountainside.
It belonged to a private chopper.
A silver-haired gentleman climbed down alongside a recovery crew. He was not dressed in a standard emergency response uniform. Instead, he sported a dark overcoat, and the precise moment he laid eyes on Claire's face, his entire demeanor shifted completely.
She instantly recognized him.
Many years prior, following the passing of her mother, Margaret Bennett, Claire had stumbled upon a concealed photo bundled with a note that stated: "If you ever find yourself in peril, seek out Jonathan Cross."
Jonathan was the head of Atlantic Shield Insurance, the exact corporation handling Claire's massive multimillion-dollar life policy.
And based on the contents of that letter, he was also her biological dad.
"Claire," he whispered gently as he crouched
by her side. "I am not going to leave you out here."
At an exclusive medical facility in Denver, physicians verified multiple bone breaks, severe hypothermia, and internal trauma. For a few terrifying seconds, they hunted for the baby's pulse.
Then, they finally located it.
Weak.
But completely alive.
Jonathan stayed firmly by Claire's hospital bed until she eventually fluttered her eyes open.
"Ethan has already submitted the insurance paperwork," he informed her. "He claimed you lost your footing, and that both you and the infant d!ed in the blizzard."
Claire clutched the hospital linens with intense force.
"When exactly did he submit it?"
"Before the official search mission had even concluded. He insisted on the rapid distribution of the $900,000,000."
Ethan genuinely thought he had permanently erased his wife and his unborn boy.
He thought society would never doubt the story of a tragic, grieving widower.
Claire tenderly placed a palm against her battered abdomen and beamed for the initial time, knowing he had absolutely no clue who had recovered her... or the massive storm that was about to rain down upon his life.
The church bells rang as though they were mourning someone important.
Inside Saint Gabriel’s Cathedral, nearly four hundred guests sat beneath vaulted ceilings while soft organ music drifted through the air. White roses surrounded Claire Bennett’s closed coffin, each arrangement selected by Ethan himself, each one paid for with money he expected to receive within days.
At the front of the church, a massive framed photograph showed Claire smiling on a summer afternoon, one hand resting over her pregnant stomach.
The image had been taken by Vanessa Monroe.
Now Vanessa stood near the rear pews in a black dress, her eyes lowered with rehearsed sorrow.
Ethan occupied the first row.
Every few minutes, he pressed a folded handkerchief to his face. From a distance, he appeared devastated. Up close, there were no tears on the cloth.
Only sweat.
Outside, snow slid from the cathedral roof in heavy sheets.
The black limousine remained across the street with its engine running.
Claire sat inside.
Her body was wrapped in medical supports beneath a long wool coat. Her left wrist was enclosed in a brace, her ribs were tightly bandaged, and every breath still brought a deep ache through her chest. A small wireless monitor beneath her clothing transmitted Noah’s heartbeat directly to the physician seated in the vehicle behind them.
Jonathan Cross sat beside her.
His silver hair was combed neatly, and his dark overcoat gave him the appearance of a man attending a funeral rather than dismantling one.
“You do not have to see this,” he said.
Claire looked through the tinted window toward the cathedral doors.
“Yes, I do.”
Jonathan studied her in silence.
“You nearly died less than forty-eight hours ago.”
“And Ethan is already burying me.”
“He is burying an empty coffin.”
“He does not know that.”
Claire watched another television crew carry equipment into the church.
“He wants the world to see him grieve,” she continued. “I want to see what he does when he believes no one is watching.”
Jonathan gave a slight nod.
