On My Wedding Night, My Husband Hit Me—Then a $12 Million Fraud Exposed His Entire Family
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE WEDDING NIGHT THAT EXPOSED EVERYTHING

569 words

“No one in this family gets involved in what happens between a husband and wife!” Austin shouted, seconds before sl:appin:g me on our own wedding night.

Just a few hours earlier, I had sworn to love him in front of two hundred people at a garden in Coral Gables. Now, still wearing my bridal makeup, I was standing in the Brickell apartment that was supposed to become our home, staring at my mother-in-law, Joanne, lying beside a table with a wound on her forehead while no one did anything.

My name is Giselle St. James. For two years, I believed I knew Austin Kensington: polite, attentive, and charming. My father trusted him because Randall, his father, had been doing business with our construction materials company for fifteen years.

That night, I discovered that all of us had trusted a mask.

The shouting pulled me out of the bedroom. Randall was in:sulti:ng Joanne for contradicting him in front of his brothers. Suddenly, he sh0ved her, and she sl:amm:ed into a piece of furniture.

I rushed over to

help her.

“She needs a doctor.”

Aunt Dolores didn't even put down her glass.

“Stay out of it, Giselle. They've always been like this. It's a husband-and-wife matter.”

I knelt beside Joanne, but Austin grabbed my arm.

“Leave her alone. You just joined this family.”

“Your mother is hurt.”

“Learn your place.”

Then he h:it me.

For a second, all I could see was Randall watching with approval, his relatives standing silently, and Joanne trembling. I realized this wasn't an isolated argument. It was a rule: whoever had more power could humiliate others, while everyone else protected the ab:use with silence.

Austin raised his hand again. I had practiced self-defense in college. I grabbed his wrist to push him away. He struggled, lost his balance, and two of his fingers became trapped against the back of a chair. His scream brought the entire room to a standstill.

“You broke my

hand!”

“And you just h:it your wife for trying to help your mother.”

I didn't argue anymore. I helped Joanne out, called emergency services, and took her to the hospital.

My father arrived shortly afterward. When he saw my cheek, he only said:

“Don't go back to that apartment alone.”

Then my grandfather, Charles St. James, the founder of our family business group, arrived. Austin knew my father had money, but he had no idea how extensive our businesses really were because we had never been the kind of family to flaunt our wealth.

“Do you want to get out of this marriage?” he asked me.

“Yes.”

“Then you will. But first, I want to know what else the Kensingtons are hiding.”

At five in the morning, my cousin Justin, an auditor, arrived with a laptop.

“I reviewed Randall's transactions with your father's company. I found thirteen nonexistent suppliers and

transfers totaling more than 12 million dollars.”

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

Justin opened another file.

“Austin is practically bankrupt. Several properties are mortgaged, and some of the money your father gave them for the wedding ended up in companies connected to Randall.”

I looked toward the room where Beatriz was sleeping with a bandage across her forehead.

I thought I had discovered a violent husband. In reality, I had just opened the door to a fifteen-year betrayal.

And what Joanne confessed to me when she woke up was even worse.
