PART 3 — Forty-Seven Termination Letters and the Last Family Meeting

“They threw my daughter into the snow on Christmas Eve,” I answered.

“You handed me divorce papers while she stood freezing on the porch. Family is finished.”

Security entered the archive thirty seconds later.

Martin tried to bluster.

Claire’s brothers tried to explain.

Claire simply stared at the camera as though she was seeing me for the first time.

I watched them being escorted out in handcuffs for attempted data theft and trespassing.

Then I closed the laptop.

Sophie was asleep on the couch in my office, still wrapped in my jacket.

I sat beside her for a long time, listening to the quiet hum of the building and the distant sound of snow against the windows.

At 5:58 a.m. I authorized the release of the forty-seven letters.

At 6:01 a.m. the first responses began arriving.

Shock.

Anger.

Threats.

Begging.

I answered none of them.

Three days after Christmas the Collins family requested a meeting.

They chose the same downtown restaurant where

Martin had once publicly mocked my truck in front of half the table.

I arrived alone.

Claire sat between her parents.

Her brothers flanked the ends.

No one smiled.

Martin spoke first.

“You’ve made your point. Reinstate them. We’ll keep quiet about the divorce. Claire will even reconsider the papers.”

I looked at my wife.

The woman who had once asked me to hide my success so her family would feel comfortable mocking me.

“The divorce proceeds,” I said. “The terminations stand. And every piece of evidence regarding payroll fraud has already been turned over to the state labor board and the IRS.”

Linda, Claire’s mother, leaned forward.

“You’re destroying your own daughter’s mother.”

“Sophie is not Claire’s daughter,” I answered. “She never was. And Claire made that clear when she watched a sixteen-year-old girl get locked outside in the snow.”

Claire’s eyes filled, but the tears looked practiced.

“Daniel,

please. I was angry. I didn’t mean—”

“You signed the papers in front of your entire family while my child cried on the porch. You meant it.”

I stood.

“One more thing. The house you currently live in is owned by a subsidiary of Whitaker Construction. Your name was never on the deed. You have thirty days to vacate. The cars leased under company accounts will be recovered this week. And the credit cards tied to the executive discretionary fund were cancelled an hour ago.”

Martin’s face turned the color of old brick.

“You can’t do that.”

“I already did.”

I left them sitting in silence beneath the expensive lighting they had always believed made them superior.

The divorce was finalized in forty-three days.

Claire received nothing beyond what the prenuptial agreement—signed when she still knew the truth—had outlined.

A modest settlement.

No share of the company.

No claim on

the house.

No ongoing support.

The forty-seven terminations held.

Several relatives faced additional charges for fraud.

Martin Collins was barred from any future employment in the construction industry within the three states where we operated after the labor board finished its investigation.
