I BROUGHT MY BABY TO WORK, THEN FOUND THE CITY’S MOST FEARED BOSS HOLDING HER IN SECRET
Chapter 4 / 4

Chapter 4

PART 4 - THE INVISIBLE MESSAGE THAT REVEALED DANIEL WAS NEVER REALLY GONE

1,300 words

Alexander immediately tried to call back.

The phone shut itself off.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then one guard’s radio burst with a voice.

“We found Peterson. He’s unconscious in the private dining room. Ms. Gable is gone.”

Peterson was the guard who had taken Brenda upstairs.

“Any sign of forced entry?” Alexander asked.

“No.”

“Security footage?”

“Looped.”

Alexander looked at the black phone.

“This building was compromised before today.”

I thought of Brenda’s satisfaction when she came downstairs. Her strange certainty. Her missing phone.

“She knew someone would take her.”

“Possibly.”

“Then the scream could be fake.”

“Possibly.”

“But if it isn’t?”

Alexander did not answer.

We returned to his office.

Paige was fully awake now, staring around with solemn blue eyes. She had no understanding of cameras, threats, old rivalries, or forged financial trails. She only knew she was hungry.

I sat on the leather sofa and prepared a bottle with shaking hands.

Alexander

stood at the window, speaking to Detective Marcus Lee, who had just arrived with two officers.

Detective Lee was broad-shouldered, tired-looking, and immediately suspicious of everyone.

He listened while Alexander explained the footage, the cellar, the duffel bag, and the call.

Then he looked at me.

“Mrs. Albright, I handled the report when your husband disappeared.”

“I remember.”

“You said he left a note.”

“Yes.”

“I need it.”

“It’s in my apartment.”

“We’ll send an officer.”

“No.”

He frowned.

“I’m going.”

“That isn’t advisable.”

“Someone entered my home before.”

“How do you know?”

“The photograph of Paige. The yellow hat was in a drawer for weeks before Saturday. I only took it out that morning.”

Detective Lee stared at me.

“You think someone searched your apartment?”

“I think someone knew exactly where to find something she had never worn outside.”

Alexander turned from the window.

“I’m coming with you.”

Lee

gave him a flat look.

“You’re not law enforcement.”

“This concerns my company, my trust, and a threat made against a child found in my office.”

“It also concerns an active kidnapping.”

“Then arrest me if I interfere.”

Detective Lee looked as though he wanted to.

Instead, he rubbed his forehead.

“Two cars. Officers front and rear. Nobody separates.”

The drive to my apartment took twelve minutes.

It felt like an hour.

I sat in the back of Alexander’s black sedan with Paige strapped into a borrowed infant seat. Alexander sat beside me, silent.

Streetlights slid across his face.

Finally, I asked, “Did you know Daniel?”

His answer came too slowly.

“I knew of him.”

My pulse quickened.

“What does that mean?”

“Daniel Albright applied for a position in my financial division three years ago.”

“He never told me.”

“He did not get the position.”

“Why?”

Alexander looked out the

window.

“Because I believed he had copied confidential data during the final stage of his interview.”

I stared at him.

“Daniel?”

“We could not prove it.”

“He was studying finance. He was ambitious, but he wasn’t a thief.”

“You cannot know every part of another person.”

His words hurt because I had already learned they were true.

“What data?”

“Accounts connected to the Remington Family Trust.”

The same trust used to pay my hospital bill.

“Did Brenda know?”

“I don’t know.”

“She knows everything Daniel ever did.”

“Then she may have known he was investigated.”

A terrible thought formed.

“What if Daniel didn’t disappear because of me?”

Alexander turned toward me.

“What if he found something?”

Neither of us said the rest.

What if Daniel had found something inside Alexander’s family accounts?

What if someone had made him vanish?

My apartment door was unlocked.

I knew immediately.

The deadbolt always stuck. I had to lift the handle while turning the key.

Tonight, the door opened at a touch.

Detective Lee ordered me to remain in the hallway while officers cleared the rooms.

Paige began to fuss.

Alexander stood beside us, eyes fixed on the doorway.

“All clear,” an officer finally called.

Inside, nothing looked disturbed.

The tiny living room was exactly as I had left it. A folded blanket on the couch. Bottles drying beside the sink. Laundry stacked in a basket.

I went to the kitchen.

The cookbook was still on the top shelf.

My hands trembled as I pulled it down.

The note remained inside.

I unfolded it on the table.

Detective Lee leaned over my shoulder.

Alexander stood across from us.

Four lines in Daniel’s handwriting.

I’m sorry.

I can’t do this.

Don’t look for me.

Tell my mother I finally chose myself.

Detective Lee took a clear evidence sleeve from his coat.

Before he could place the note inside, Paige slapped the edge of the table.

The bottle rolled.

Milk spilled across the paper.

“Oh no.”

I grabbed a towel.

As the liquid soaked through, dark marks appeared beneath the ink.

Lines.

Numbers.

Writing hidden between the visible sentences.

Everyone stopped.

Detective Lee held the paper beneath the kitchen light.

More words emerged as the paper became wet.

A second message.

Written in invisible ink.

My throat closed.

Daniel had always loved puzzles. In college, he used lemon juice to leave me secret notes inside old textbooks.

I had forgotten.

Detective Lee read aloud.

“Brenda is not my mother.”

I felt the room tilt.

He continued.

“She was paid to raise me. Remington knows the truth.”

I looked at Alexander.

His face had gone white.

The last line appeared slowly beneath the others.

“Paige belongs to the bloodline. Do not let Alexander see her eyes.”

Nobody moved.

Paige turned toward Alexander.

Her blue eyes reflected the overhead light.

Alexander stared at her as if he were looking at a ghost.

Then he took one unsteady step backward.

“My sister,” he whispered.

I could barely hear him.

“What?”

Alexander’s gaze remained fixed on Paige.

“My younger sister had those eyes.”

Detective Lee looked up sharply.

“You don’t have a sister.”

Alexander’s voice was hollow.

“Not anymore.”

He reached for the back of a chair, gripping it as though the room had begun to spin.

“She disappeared twenty-eight years ago.”

I held Paige closer.

“What was her name?”

Alexander looked at me.

“Eleanor.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But Paige reacted.

She smiled.

Then a soft electronic chime sounded from the baby bag.

I froze.

The bag had been searched at the restaurant.

At least, I thought it had.

Detective Lee opened it carefully.

Beneath the diapers, stitched into the lining, was Brenda’s missing phone.

The screen lit by itself.

A video began to play.

Brenda sat in a dim room, her hands tied in front of her.

Her face was bruised.

Behind her stood a man in a gray coat.

The same man I had seen near the playground.

Owen Pike.

Brenda looked directly into the camera.

“Hannah,” she said, struggling to breathe, “Daniel is alive.”

My knees nearly gave way.

“He never abandoned you. I made him leave because they were watching.”

The man behind her placed a hand on her shoulder.

Brenda flinched.

“You must not trust Alexander,” she continued. “He does not know what he is. He does not know what his father did.”

Alexander stepped closer to the phone.

Brenda began to cry.

“Paige is not Daniel’s daughter.”

The room went silent.

My lips parted, but no sound came.

That was impossible.

There had never been anyone else.

Brenda looked past the camera, terrified.

Then she said the words that shattered everything I believed.

“Daniel is your brother.”

The video cut to black.

A message appeared on the screen.

PIER NINE.

ONE HOUR.

BRING ALEXANDER AND THE CHILD.

COME ALONE, HANNAH.

Below it was a live photograph of a man tied to a chair.

Older.

Thinner.

Bearded.

But unmistakable.

Daniel.

Alive.

His eyes were open.

And they were the same pale blue as Paige’s.

THE END.
