Part 2 — The Perfect Sister Born for the Spotlight

Victoria had arrived late that evening, of course.

An entrance meant nothing without witnesses.

She swept into the dining room wearing midnight blue silk that moved like water over her body. Every woman noticed. Every man pretended not to. Her blond hair was pinned into effortless perfection, her makeup soft enough to appear natural, her smile warm enough to feel rehearsed only if you knew her.

And Elena knew her.

“Elena,” Victoria said as she passed her chair.

Not hello.

Not how are you.

Just her name.

The way someone acknowledged a lamp left on in the corner.

“You look beautiful,” Elena said.

Victoria’s smile sharpened.

“You look comfortable.”

It was not cruel enough to be challenged.

That was Victoria’s gift.

She could cut a person open without leaving a wound anyone else could point to.

Then Adrien Volkov arrived at exactly seven-thirty.

He did not make an entrance.

He made the room afraid.

He was tall, broad-shouldered,

and dressed in black without a single unnecessary detail. His dark hair was brushed back from a face too controlled to be simply handsome. Handsome men invited attention.

Adrien Volkov demanded caution.

People straightened when he walked in.

Voices softened.

Richard hurried forward with both hands extended.

Diane kissed his cheek.

Victoria tilted her face toward him like a woman already imagining herself in a wedding gown beside him.

“You look well,” Adrien told her.

Victoria glowed.

Elena looked down at her water glass.

Dinner unfolded in the familiar Whitmore rhythm.

Polite conversations about markets, travel, foundations, politics with no real opinions, and art discussed by people who had never once been moved by beauty.

Elena answered three questions all night.

One aunt asked if she was still “doing something with books.”

Elena said she worked in nonprofit grant coordination.

It was close enough to the truth that nobody cared

to ask more.

Then Richard stood before dessert and raised his glass to Victoria.

“My daughter has always understood duty,” he said, his eyes shining at the wrong child. “She understands legacy. She understands what it means to carry the Whitmore name forward.”

Elena raised her glass with everyone else.

She had become very good at swallowing things that hurt.

The woman beside her, Aunt Celia, leaned close and murmured, “Doesn’t it bother you?”

Elena turned. “What?”

Aunt Celia’s voice dropped even lower, as if she didn’t want to be overheard, though the words she was about to speak were far too loud to stay private.

“The way they treat you. The way they treat her,” she said, nodding her head subtly toward Victoria, who was laughing as her father spoke about legacy, her perfect smile never faltering.
