THE PREGNANT WIFE TOLD THE MAFIA BOSS TO TAKE HIS FREEDOM, BUT HER SIGNATURE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING
Chapter 3 / 4

Chapter 3

PART 3 — THE MORNING THE MORETTI EMPIRE STOPPED OBEYING HIM

1,338 words

Monday morning began exactly the way Adriano Moretti expected.

At 6:42 a.m., he woke in apartment 6B at Harbor House.

Bianca Ricci was asleep beside him.

Boston was pale beyond the windows.

For the first time in months, Adriano felt almost weightless.

The divorce had gone better than he imagined.

No screaming.

No threats.

No ugly public battle.

Bella had taken what belonged to the Romanos, protected the child, and walked away from almost everything else.

He told himself that proved she understood.

Their marriage had simply ended.

People changed.

Love changed.

There was no reason to destroy each other over it.

By seven fifteen, Bianca was awake and wearing one of his shirts.

“Monday,” she said.

Adriano glanced toward her.

She smiled.

“The transfer.”

“I know.”

“Victor’s people need confirmation before nine.”

Adriano’s expression hardened.

“Don’t say his name here.”

Bianca rolled her eyes.

“You’re still acting like someone is listening.”

“Someone is always listening.”

She crossed the

room and wrapped her arms around him.

“After today, it won’t matter.”

Adriano kissed her forehead.

He believed her.

At 7:56, his driver left him outside Moretti Atlantic headquarters.

The forty-two-story building had carried his family’s name for three generations.

Security guards stood straighter when he entered.

Executives greeted him carefully.

His assistant followed him toward the private elevators with the morning schedule.

“Bank confirmation at eight?”

“Pending.”

Adriano stopped walking.

“Pending?”

“That’s what Treasury sent.”

“Call them.”

“They’re already trying.”

His phone rang before he reached the elevator.

Chief Financial Officer Daniel Price.

Adriano answered.

“Talk.”

“There’s a hold on the Legacy Trust transfer.”

Adriano’s expression changed.

“Who authorized it?”

“We’re trying to determine that.”

“You don’t determine it. You remove it.”

“Adriano—”

“Eight million dollars was approved Friday.”

“I know.”

“Then move it.”

Daniel went quiet.

“An emergency beneficiary objection was filed at seven fifty-eight.”

Everything inside Adriano

became still.

“By whom?”

“I don’t have that information.”

“Get it.”

He ended the call.

At 8:03, a second message arrived.

EMERGENCY BOARD SESSION — 8:30 A.M.

Attendance mandatory.

Adriano stared at the screen.

No one summoned the chairman of Moretti Atlantic Holdings to an emergency board session without his permission.

No one.

He called General Counsel.

No answer.

He called Daniel again.

Voicemail.

Then his father.

Matteo answered on the fourth ring.

“What happened?” Adriano demanded.

“You’ll find out upstairs.”

Adriano’s blood went cold.

“Are you in the building?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Matteo disconnected.

At 8:27, Adriano entered the boardroom.

Every chair was occupied.

Twelve directors.

Independent counsel.

Two outside auditors.

Daniel Price.

Alina Mercer.

Matteo.

And at the far end of the table, wearing the same cream maternity dress she had worn when he signed their divorce papers—

Bella.

Adriano stopped.

For one second, neither of them moved.

Then

his eyes dropped to the folder in front of her.

He knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

“You,” he said.

Bella’s expression remained calm.

“Good morning, Adriano.”

He looked at his father.

“What is this?”

Matteo did not answer.

Alina did.

“This is a special session under Section Fourteen of the Romano-Moretti Stabilization Covenant.”

Adriano turned sharply.

“What?”

“The covenant executed eleven years ago.”

“I know what it is.”

“Then you understand why we’re here.”

His confidence returned.

Because this was a boardroom.

Paper.

Procedure.

Numbers.

This was his territory.

“An emergency suspension requires evidence of intentional diversion to a hostile entity.”

Alina nodded.

“Correct.”

“You don’t have it.”

Bella opened her folder.

The first document appeared on the screen behind her.

Apartment 6B.

Paid through an entity funded by the Legacy Trust.

Second document.

Luxury vehicle.

Third.

Private flights.

Fourth.

Jewelry.

Adriano looked at Bella.

“You went through my accounts?”

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“I went through our son’s.”

The room became silent.

Bella advanced to the next page.

Bianca Ricci Consulting.

Eight million dollars.

Then Northstar Infrastructure Partners.

A director near the end of the table removed his glasses.

Daniel Price looked sick.

Adriano remained standing.

“Northstar is a legitimate infrastructure vehicle.”

Bella clicked again.

Victor Reeve’s ownership chain appeared.

Three holding companies.

Two trusts.

One final controlling interest.

Victor Reeve.

A murmur spread across the boardroom.

Adriano’s eyes flashed toward Bianca’s company name.

“This is wrong.”

Alina answered.

“We verified it independently.”

“I was told Northstar had outside port access we needed.”

“By whom?” Matteo asked.

Adriano said nothing.

Bella already knew.

“Bianca?”

His eyes snapped toward her.

She did not sound jealous.

That made the question unbearable.

“You don’t understand the transaction.”

“Then explain it.”

“It was strategic.”

“Using our child’s trust?”

“I was replacing the funds.”

“When?”

Adriano’s jaw tightened.

“This is ridiculous.”

Bella looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said something that broke whatever remained of his control.

“You missed our son’s specialist appointment because Bianca wanted a weekend in New York.”

Nobody moved.

“That was our marriage,” Bella continued. “I could have handled that privately.”

She touched the document on the screen.

“But this is his future.”

Adriano looked toward Matteo.

“Father.”

Matteo’s face was expressionless.

“Did you authorize the transfer?”

Adriano hesitated.

That hesitation answered everyone.

“Yes.”

“Knowing it came from the Legacy Trust?”

“Yes, temporarily.”

“Did you disclose Bianca Ricci as someone with whom you had a personal relationship?”

“No.”

“Did you verify Northstar’s beneficial ownership?”

“My team—”

“I asked if you did.”

“No.”

Matteo leaned back.

For the first time in Adriano’s adult life, his father looked at him not with anger, but disappointment.

It was worse.

Alina distributed a packet.

“The emergency motion requests immediate suspension of Adriano Moretti’s authority as chairman pending forensic review.”

Adriano laughed once.

A cold, disbelieving sound.

“You think you can remove me?”

Bella said nothing.

“You signed divorce papers Friday and spent the weekend building a coup?”

“No.”

Bella reached into her folder.

She removed a document bearing her father’s signature.

“My father built the mechanism eleven years ago.”

Adriano stared at the Romano seal.

Then he remembered.

The covenant.

The voting protections.

The clause he had dismissed as ceremonial language demanded by an old shipping man who distrusted concentrated control.

He looked at Bella.

“How many votes?”

She did not answer.

Alina did.

“With the Romano block, independent directors, and Matteo Moretti’s shares, the motion has sufficient support.”

Adriano turned toward his father.

“You voted against me?”

Matteo finally spoke.

“I voted for the family you forgot you were supposed to protect.”

Something broke behind Adriano’s eyes.

The vote proceeded.

One by one.

Yes.

Yes.

Abstain.

Yes.

Yes.

With every answer, the empire Adriano had spent his entire life inheriting became less his.

At 9:06 a.m., the motion passed.

Effective immediately, Adriano Moretti was suspended as chairman of Moretti Atlantic Holdings.

His authorization over the Legacy Trust was revoked.

Corporate security access was limited.

All transactions connected to Bianca Ricci Consulting were frozen pending review.

Adriano sat perfectly still.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from Bianca.

CALL ME NOW.

He stood abruptly and left the room.

Bella watched through the glass as he called her.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

No answer.

Then Daniel Price’s phone rang inside the boardroom.

He listened for several seconds.

“What?” he said.

Every face turned toward him.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Security at Harbor House says Ms. Ricci left apartment 6B forty minutes ago.”

Adriano heard through the open door.

He stepped back into the room.

“Where did she go?”

Daniel swallowed.

“They don’t know.”

Alina’s phone buzzed next.

She read the message.

Her expression changed.

“What?” Bella asked.

Alina turned the screen around.

A private aircraft registered to a Victor Reeve subsidiary had departed Hanscom Field twenty-three minutes earlier.

Passenger manifest:

Bianca Ricci.

Adriano stared at the name.

For the first time, Bella saw him understand the possibility she had feared from the beginning.

Maybe Bianca had never been escaping with Adriano.

Maybe she had been using him to open the door for someone else.

And the eight million dollars had only been the beginning.
