I WAS SEVEN MONTHS PREGNANT WHEN MY HUSBAND FOUND HIS SISTER INSPECTING MY BRUISED ARM
Chapter 2 / 4

Chapter 2

PART 2 - THE AUDIT THAT TURNED EIGHTY-SIX THOUSAND INTO FOUR MILLION

1,168 words

Serena laughed, but the sound was thinner than before.

“An audit? You expect anyone to believe you went behind the trustees without telling me?”

Julian never looked away from her. “Nora answered my question. Now you answer hers.”

For the first time since he had walked through the door, Serena hesitated.

I reached into my handbag and carefully removed a sealed envelope. The security stamp across the flap was still intact.

“I mailed certified copies three days ago,” I said quietly. “One to the trustees. One to the family attorney. One to the independent accounting firm.”

Serena's eyes locked onto the envelope as if it might explode.

“You're lying.”

“I thought so too,” Maria whispered, stepping farther into the room. “Until I drove Mrs. Vance to the courier myself after you left for lunch.”

Serena spun toward her. “You disobeyed me?”

“No,” Maria replied. “I obeyed the lady who actually lives in this house.”

Julian slowly opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs of empty treatment rooms, canceled transportation bookings billed as completed trips, forged nursing invoices, and signed statements from two clinics confirming that Nora had never received the services charged to the trust.

Then another document slipped onto the table.

A timeline.

Every fraudulent reimbursement matched a day Serena had prevented Nora from leaving the estate.

Julian's jaw tightened.

“You trapped my pregnant wife here while billing the trust for care she never received.”

Serena forced a smile. “Those papers prove nothing. Anyone could have fabricated them.”

Before anyone answered, Julian's phone vibrated.

The caller ID displayed only one word.

TRUSTEES.

He answered on speaker.

“Nora,” an older man's voice said immediately, “we've received your preliminary audit. We were planning to discuss it tonight, but there has been... an unexpected discovery.”

Silence swallowed the room.

“What discovery?” Julian asked.

“The missing eighty-six thousand dollars is only the beginning.”

A pause followed.

“Our forensic team believes someone has diverted more than four million dollars from the Vance Family Trust over the past four years.”

Julian slowly turned toward his sister.

Serena's confident expression disappeared.

But before anyone could speak again, the front gate alarm echoed through the house, followed by the sound of several vehicles arriving at once.

Maria moved toward the window.

“Three cars,” she said. “Mr. Hargrove is here. So is Mrs. Bell. And the family attorney.”

Serena straightened immediately. “Good. Then we can settle this properly instead of listening to a frightened pregnant woman and a driver.”

Julian’s eyes hardened.

“Careful.”

She ignored him.

Within minutes, Arthur Hargrove, chairman of the Vance trust, entered the drawing room with two other trustees, the family attorney, Evelyn Price, and a forensic accountant I recognized from the firm that had received my package.

No one sat down.

Arthur looked

directly at me.

“Mrs. Vance, before anything else, do you need medical attention?”

Serena answered for me.

“She’s fine.”

Julian stepped between us.

“I didn’t ask you.”

I told Arthur about the contractions, the missed appointment, and the marks on my arm. I did not exaggerate. I did not need to.

Evelyn Price quietly called my obstetrician and arranged for a mobile maternal-care team to come to the estate.

Then Arthur placed a thick folder on the table.

“We have frozen discretionary trust reimbursements pending investigation.”

Serena’s head snapped toward him.

“You cannot freeze my authority.”

“I already did.”

Her lips parted.

Arthur continued.

“Four years ago, after your father’s death, several expense categories were moved to an automated reimbursement system. Over time, vendors began appearing that had no physical offices, no tax history, or addresses connected to vacant properties.”

The forensic accountant opened his laptop.

A map appeared.

Nine companies.

Nine mailing addresses.

Five led to empty suites.

Two led to mailbox stores.

One led to an apartment Serena had rented under her middle name.

The last led to a property outside Charleston owned by a holding company called Bellweather Grove LLC.

Julian stared at the screen.

“What is Bellweather Grove?”

No one answered at first.

Then the accountant clicked another file.

“A private property purchased eighteen months ago for 2.7 million dollars.”

Serena moved toward the door.

Evelyn Price spoke sharply.

“Do not leave.”

Serena stopped.

The accountant continued.

“The down payment came from three vendor accounts that received repeated transfers from the Vance trust.”

Julian looked physically ill.

“Serena.”

She turned slowly.

“You think Dad would have wanted you to hand everything to her?” she demanded, pointing at me. “A woman who appeared five years ago and suddenly became the center of your life?”

I felt my stomach tighten again.

Julian’s voice was low.

“Nora didn’t take anything from this family.”

“She was going to.”

Serena’s eyes burned.

“You still don’t understand, do you? The moment that baby is born, everything changes.”

Arthur’s expression sharpened.

“What exactly changes?”

Serena realized too late that she had said too much.

Evelyn Price opened another folder.

“Under your father’s trust amendment, Julian’s first child activates the generational transfer provision.”

I looked at Julian.

He looked just as stunned as I was.

Evelyn continued.

“Thirty-five percent of the family’s controlling property interests move into a protected branch trust for the child. Neither Julian nor Serena can sell those interests. The child’s surviving parent serves as temporary co-guardian of the assets until a professional fiduciary is appointed.”

Serena whispered, “That amendment was never supposed to stand.”

Arthur’s face went still.

“How do you know about a sealed amendment?”

No one moved.

Then Maria spoke from behind us.

“Because she has been in Mr. Julian’s father’s study.”

Serena turned on her.

Maria swallowed.

“Three months ago, I found her copying files from the locked cabinet. She told me Mr. Julian had authorized it.”

Julian looked at his sister.

“I was in Zurich three months ago.”

The maternal-care team arrived before Serena could answer. While one nurse checked my blood pressure, another attached a monitor around my abdomen.

The room filled with the soft electronic rhythm of our baby’s heartbeat.

For the first time that evening, Serena looked afraid.

Not because of the audit.

Not because of the trustees.

Because everyone was finally hearing evidence she could not control.

The nurse studied the monitor.

“You’re having regular contractions.”

Julian knelt beside me.

“How regular?”

“Too regular for thirty weeks.”

The room blurred for a second.

Serena stepped backward.

“I didn’t cause that.”

No one had accused her.

Not yet.

Then the forensic accountant lifted a final sheet from his folder.

“There’s one more issue.”

Arthur frowned. “What issue?”

The accountant looked at Serena.

“Yesterday afternoon, someone using Serena Vance’s credentials attempted to transfer ownership of Bellweather Grove to a newly created company.”

Serena’s face went white.

“Who owns the new company?” Julian asked.

The accountant turned the page toward us.

The registered beneficiary was not Serena.

It was my unborn child.

And beneath the filing was a notarized signature bearing my name.

A signature I had never written.
