I kept my eyes lowered when Mom laughed and said, “She fixes computers for the government?
Please.” Everyone in the room laughed too, until the front door opened. A man in a dark suit walked in, showed his badge, and said, “Miss Carter, the DEA Administrator is waiting for you. Right now.” The laughter stopped. Mom’s face went pale. And when he turned to me and whispered, “They found the file,” I realized this night was about to reveal much more than my job.
I kept my eyes on the hardwood floor while my mother laughed loud enough for everyone in the dining room to hear.
