MY MOTHER-IN-LAW KICKED MY CHAIR AT DINNER, UNAWARE I ALREADY KNEW THE SECRET THAT WOULD DESTROY THEM
Chapter 2 / 4

Chapter 2

PART 2 - THE BADGES ARRIVED BEFORE THEY COULD ESCAPE THE EVIDENCE

863 words

Jessica dabbed the last streak of ranch dressing from her cheek and calmly folded the napkin onto the table.

The silence inside the private dining room became almost unbearable.

Connor frowned.

He had expected tears.

An apology.

Maybe even another desperate promise to "do better."

Instead, she smiled.

It was small.

Quiet.

Completely out of place.

Brenda narrowed her eyes.

"What exactly is so funny?"

Jessica looked around at every guest seated at the table.

"I was just wondering how much everyone here already knows."

The business associates exchanged uneasy glances.

Connor forced another laugh.

"Jessica, don't embarrass yourself."

"Oh, I don't intend to."

She reached into her purse and placed her phone beside her water glass.

The screen lit up.

A single notification appeared.

Financial Crimes Division: Investigation Active.

Connor's smile disappeared.

Brenda's fingers tightened around her champagne flute.

"What is that supposed to mean?" she asked.

Jessica ignored her.

Instead, she looked toward one of Connor's investors.

"Mr. Franklin... did Connor ever tell you your investment was

paying for medical imaging software?"

The older man nodded slowly.

"Of course."

Jessica tilted her head.

"Interesting."

She tapped her phone once.

A document appeared on the screen.

"It actually financed luxury vacations, jewelry purchases, and monthly transfers into a consulting company owned by Brenda."

"No," Connor snapped, reaching across the table.

Jessica calmly pulled the phone away before he could touch it.

"Careful."

Her voice remained almost gentle.

"You wouldn't want to interfere with evidence."

The room fell completely silent.

One investor quietly lowered his wine glass.

Another slowly pushed his chair back.

Brenda finally recovered enough to laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

Jessica met her eyes.

"I thought you'd say that."

She opened another message.

This one contained a photograph.

Connor stared at it...

...and all the color drained from his face.

It wasn't just another financial record.

It was a picture of Connor personally signing documents that should

never have existed.

Jessica hadn't taken it.

Someone inside Connor's own company had.

Before anyone could speak again, the restaurant's hostess hurried into the room and whispered something into the waiter's ear.

The waiter looked directly at Connor.

Then toward the entrance.

"Sir..."

"There are several people here asking for you."

Connor slowly turned toward the glass doors.

The people waiting outside were carrying leather folders...

...and government badges.

The first investigator through the door was a gray-haired woman in a navy suit. She did not raise her voice or make a scene. She simply showed Connor her credentials, spoke his full legal name, and informed him that investigators had obtained authority to secure company records, electronic devices, and documents relevant to an active financial fraud inquiry.

For the first time that evening, Connor was not laughing.

He stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

"This is insane. My

wife is angry. She's been unstable for months. Ask anyone."

Jessica had known he would say it.

That was why she had prepared for it.

She unlocked a second folder on her phone and turned the screen toward the investigators.

Inside were copies of emails Connor had sent to friends, business partners, and even their family doctor, carefully creating a narrative that Jessica was forgetful, paranoid, and incapable of managing money.

Beside those messages were timestamps from the same days Connor had opened loans in her name.

The investigator studied the screen.

"So these statements about your wife's mental condition began immediately before the disputed signatures appeared?"

Connor said nothing.

Jessica answered for him.

"Yes."

Brenda rose from her chair.

"She is twisting everything. Connor was protecting his family."

Mr. Franklin stared at her.

"With my money?"

Brenda's mouth closed.

Another investor, Dana Reeves, reached for her purse.

"My attorney is getting every record tonight."

Connor stepped toward her.

"Dana, don't overreact."

She recoiled.

"Don't tell me not to overreact after you used my capital to buy your mother a Cartier bracelet."

Brenda instinctively covered her wrist.

That tiny movement was enough.

Everyone noticed.

Jessica almost laughed.

The jeweled bracelet Brenda had been displaying all night had appeared in the transaction ledger two months earlier under the false label: Laboratory Calibration Expense.

The investigator looked at it too.

"Mrs. Caldwell, please don't leave the room yet."

Brenda slowly lowered her hand.

The birthday dinner had officially ended.

What remained was an accounting.

One investigator collected Connor's phone.

Another requested his laptop and office access credentials.

A third placed a preservation notice in front of Brenda, warning her not to destroy or alter financial records.

Then Mr. Franklin asked the question Jessica had been waiting for.

"What about the lien on Jessica's house?"

Connor looked at her sharply.

He had assumed she knew about the missing money.

He had not realized she knew about everything.

Jessica leaned back in the chair Brenda had kicked only minutes before.

"The lien was obtained using a forged signature and a falsified spousal authorization. The lender has already been notified."

Connor's face changed.

Not fear.

Calculation.

He was trying to determine which escape route remained.

Jessica watched him search for one.

There wasn't one.
