My Ex Invited Me to Watch Him Marry His Pregnant Mistress—He Didn’t Know I’d Just Had His Baby
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE WEDDING INVITATION THAT TURNED HIS VICTORY INTO MY EVIDENCE

1,602 words

Eight months after our divorce, my ex-husband invited me to his wedding.

Not because he wanted peace.

Not because he wanted closure.

Ryan Brooks wanted me sitting in the front row so he could watch my face when he married the woman he'd cheated on me with.

And he wanted me to see her pregnant belly.

To him, that was the final victory.

Proof that Lauren had supposedly given him the one thing I never could.

But Ryan had no idea that when he called me that morning, I was lying in a Chicago hospital bed with his newborn daughter sleeping three feet away.

And the court-certified DNA test proving he was her father?

That wasn't even the most dangerous secret I was carrying into his wedding.

The call came just after sunrise.

Gray morning light slipped through the hospital blinds, washing the white walls in pale silver. My entire body ached from childbirth. My hair was twisted into a loose knot,

my eyes burned from exhaustion, and the room smelled faintly of antiseptic and baby powder.

Beside me, my daughter slept peacefully in a bassinet.

She wasn't even twelve hours old.

Tiny pink fingers rested beside her cheek. Dark wisps of hair covered her head. Every few seconds, her little lips moved as though she were dreaming.

I'd spent most of the night staring at her.

After everything I'd survived, I couldn't believe something so perfect had come from me.

Then my phone lit up.

RYAN BROOKS.

I froze.

Eight months.

Eight months since our seven-year marriage officially ended.

Eight months since I'd signed the divorce papers, packed two suitcases, and walked away from a life where I'd spent years being told I wasn't enough.

Every instinct screamed at me not to answer.

But maybe I wanted to hear his voice one last time.

Maybe I finally knew it couldn't break

me anymore.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Ryan didn't bother with a greeting.

“Come to my wedding.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“My wedding,” he said impatiently. “Saturday. I want you there.”

Then he laughed.

That same low, smug laugh he always used when he thought he'd won.

“You should see what a real woman looks like, Mia.”

My eyes moved to the bassinet.

Ryan continued.

“Lauren's pregnant.”

He paused deliberately.

Then came the knife.

“Unlike you.”

For one terrible second, the hospital room seemed to disappear.

Those two words opened every door I'd spent months trying to close.

Two miscarriages.

Fertility appointments.

Needles.

Blood tests.

Ultrasounds where doctors lowered their voices while I stared at the ceiling, trying desperately not to fall apart.

Nights when I'd locked myself in the bathroom so Ryan wouldn't hear me crying.

My doctor had always told me the same thing.

My body wasn't broken.

I needed time.

Ryan preferred a crueler explanation.

“You can't give me a family.”

His mother, Patricia, had been worse.

“A man like Ryan deserves children.”

And Lauren?

Lauren had started as Ryan's assistant.

Then she became his mistress.

Three weeks after our divorce was finalized, she sent white roses to my apartment.

The card contained four words.

Some women are chosen.

I threw away the roses.

I kept the card.

“You still there?” Ryan asked.

I looked at my sleeping daughter.

“Yes.”

He chuckled.

“You always wanted a family. I figured you'd enjoy watching me finally have one.”

Something inside me went completely still.

Because Ryan didn't know that three days before our divorce became final, I'd discovered I was pregnant.

I hadn't told him.

I hadn't told Patricia.

I hadn't told anyone connected to the Brooks family.

By then, I'd learned enough about Ryan to understand something important:

Sharing DNA with someone didn't automatically make them safe.

For seven years, I'd watched him control everything around him—our money, my friendships, our schedules, even what I wore to company events.

And once Lauren entered our marriage, his cruelty stopped being private.

So I disappeared.

I moved to Chicago.

Changed doctors.

Ignored his occasional messages.

And when my daughter was born, the hospital bracelet didn't say Brooks.

It said:

BABY GIRL CARTER.

My name.

Not his.

“Sure,” I said quietly.

Ryan paused.

“Sure what?”

“I'll come.”

The satisfaction in his voice was instant.

“Good.”

He actually sounded pleased.

Then he added, “Try not to embarrass yourself.”

A small smile touched my lips.

“I never do.”

“You still pretending to have pride?”

“No, Ryan.”

Silence.

“Then what do you have?”

I turned toward the leather folder sitting on the table beside my hospital bed.

“Proof.”

The silence on the other end changed.

His arrogance vanished.

“What does that mean?”

“You'll find out.”

“Mia.”

“Send me the address.”

“What proof?”

I ended the call.

My hand didn't shake once.

For several seconds, I listened to nothing but the quiet beeping of the hospital equipment and my daughter's soft breathing.

Then I reached for the leather folder.

The DNA report sat on top.

Court-certified.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

Ryan Brooks was my daughter's biological father.

My attorney had obtained authorization to compare our daughter's DNA with a genetic sample Ryan had placed in storage during our fertility treatment. The chain of custody was clean. The result was legally usable.

But underneath that report was something that could destroy far more than his wedding.

Bank statements.

Corporate transfers.

Emails.

Signed affidavits.

Records I'd spent months collecting after discovering that money had been disappearing from an account tied to the inheritance my grandmother had left me.

At first, I'd thought Ryan had simply stolen from me during our marriage.

Then I found Lauren's name.

She had authorized transfers.

Created shell invoices.

Helped move money through accounts that should never have had access to my inheritance.

The total was staggering.

But even that wasn't the part that frightened me anymore.

Several transfers led to a company I'd never heard of.

Its name appeared again and again across invoices, consulting agreements, and private correspondence.

Before I could study the papers again, my phone buzzed.

Ryan had sent the wedding details.

Venue.

Time.

Dress code.

Reception information.

Typical Ryan.

Even his attempt to humiliate me came neatly formatted.

I almost laughed.

Then I opened the digital invitation.

A photograph of Ryan and Lauren filled the screen.

They stood beneath an archway of white roses.

Lauren rested one hand over her pregnant stomach while Ryan wrapped an arm around her waist.

Below their names was a list of companies sponsoring their extravagant reception.

I read the first.

Then the second.

Then the third.

My breath stopped.

Hawthorne Strategic Holdings.

Slowly, I looked down at the folder.

There it was.

The exact same name.

The company connected to the transfers from my grandmother's inheritance.

For months, I'd assumed Ryan and Lauren were stealing the money for themselves.

But Hawthorne Strategic Holdings wasn't Ryan's company.

It wasn't Lauren's either.

According to corporate records my attorney had obtained, someone else had been controlling it for years.

Someone powerful enough to bury transactions.

Someone close enough to Ryan to know intimate details about our marriage.

My daughter stirred softly.

I lifted her from the bassinet and held her against my chest.

Her tiny hand wrapped around my finger.

“Your father just invited us to his wedding,” I whispered.

Then I looked back at the invitation.

Something bothered me.

I enlarged the sponsor information.

Beneath Hawthorne Strategic Holdings was the name of a representative.

I stared at it.

Once.

Twice.

Then my stomach dropped.

Nathan Carter.

My mother's older brother.

My grandmother's former financial adviser.

And, until three years earlier, one of the two trustees authorized to oversee the investment account attached to my inheritance.

Uncle Nathan had taught me how to ride a bicycle.

He had given a toast at my wedding.

He had sat beside me after my first miscarriage and told me family was the only thing in life money couldn't replace.

He had also been the person who recommended Ryan's company for several “low-risk” investments using funds from my inheritance.

Suddenly, pieces I'd been holding separately for months began slamming together.

Ryan's affair hadn't started this.

Lauren hadn't started it either.

The missing inheritance.

My marriage.

The divorce.

Even Ryan's sudden determination to have me attend his wedding.

They weren't separate events.

They were pieces of something much larger.

And the person standing behind it had been close enough to me for years that I'd never once thought to look in his direction.

My newborn daughter slept against my heart as I stared at Nathan's name glowing on my phone.

Then I opened my attorney's messages.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard for only a second before I typed five words.

“I know who's behind it.”

I hit send.

Saturday wasn't going to be Ryan Brooks's perfect wedding.

It wasn't going to be Lauren's victory.

And I wasn't going there to sit quietly in the front row while they humiliated me.

I was going there with a DNA test proving the groom had a newborn daughter.

With financial records connecting the bride to stolen inheritance money.

And with evidence pointing toward someone neither of them knew I'd finally uncovered.

Ryan wanted me at his wedding because he thought watching him marry Lauren would destroy me.

Instead, he'd made the biggest mistake of his life.

He'd personally sent me an invitation to walk through those doors carrying every secret they thought was buried.

And when I looked one final time at Nathan Carter's name beneath Hawthorne Strategic Holdings, I realized something that made my blood run cold.

The person behind everything wasn't just connected to Ryan.

He was going to be at the wedding.
