PART 3 — THE CORROSIVE WATER EXPOSED A DEEPER BETRAYAL

Hale whispered, “Then who—”

A voice came from behind them.

“Step away from the table.”

Katherine froze.

Sergeant Nolan stood beside the storage rack.

The nervous range officer.

The forgettable man who had spent the afternoon avoiding everyone’s eyes.

In his hand was a service pistol.

The officers scattered instinctively.

Vance stepped in front of Katherine.

Nolan’s hand trembled.

“Don’t.”

Katherine stared at him.

“You swapped the canteen.”

Nolan said nothing.

“You knew Hale would use it.”

“He always does that.”

Hale looked sick.

“What?”

Nolan laughed bitterly.

“You humiliate people when you’re angry. Throw paperwork. Knock coffee over. Dump water on equipment.”

Every word hit Hale harder.

“You were predictable, Admiral.”

Katherine slowly lowered the receiver.

Nolan’s eyes moved toward it.

“There are things bigger than you understand.”

“Then explain them.”

“There’s nothing to explain.”

“You corrupted the alloy?”

“No.”

That answer surprised her.

Nolan’s breathing became uneven.

“I only moved the shipments.”

“Who paid you?”

“No one.”

“Then

why?”

His eyes suddenly filled with tears.

“My son.”

Katherine’s voice softened.

“What about him?”

“He was stationed in Nevada.”

The meaning settled over them.

One of the failed rifles.

One of the incidents.

Nolan swallowed painfully.

“They blamed him.”

Katherine remembered the file.

Staff Sergeant Daniel Nolan.

Weapon malfunction during live-fire exercise.

Severe injuries to two Marines.

Career ended.

Public report: improper maintenance.

Sergeant Nolan whispered, “Daniel told them the rifle failed. Nobody believed him.”

His pistol lowered slightly.

“So you started investigating.”

“I found shipment records.”

“Then why contaminate my evidence?”

“Because they told me they would d/i/e if I didn’t.”

Katherine’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

“My grandchildren.”

The pistol dropped another inch.

Nolan’s face collapsed.

“They sent photographs. School pickup times. My daughter’s address.”

Vance said gently, “Put the we/@/pon down.”

“I couldn’t.”

“You can now.”

“No.”

Nolan looked directly at Katherine.

“They’re watching.”

Katherine followed his gaze.

Not toward the officers.

Toward the black SUV.

Its driver’s seat was empty.

But the rear window was slightly open.

Katherine shouted, “DOWN!”

A sharp crack split the desert air.

Everyone dropped.

The round struck the diagnostic table, exploding metal fragments across the concrete.

Security personnel surged toward the SUV.

The rear door burst open.

A man ran into the desert.

He made perhaps twenty meters before three Marines tackled him.

Silence returned slowly.

Nolan’s pistol slipped from his hand.

He sank to his knees.

Katherine picked herself up.

A thin line of bl/o/od marked her forearm where a fragment had grazed her.

Hale stared at it.

Then at the shattered table.

His arrogance was gone.

Completely.

Vance walked toward the captured man.

One of the security officers searched him and pulled an identification wallet from his jacket.

The general opened it.

Then stopped.

Katherine saw his expression.

“Who is

he?”

Vance looked back at her.

“Defense Criminal Investigative Service.”

Hale whispered, “Federal?”

The captured man laughed.

“You’re all very impressed with yourselves.”

Katherine approached.

“You recruited Nolan.”

“No.”

“You threatened his family.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

The man smiled.

“That’s the part you still haven’t figured out.”

Katherine looked at the damaged receiver on the table.

Serial 4419.

The anonymous warning.

The manipulated supply chain.

The inspection approvals.

And suddenly she understood.

Not because of what was present.

Because of what was missing.

Every defective rifle had passed through the same certification laboratory.

Not Hale’s command.

Not Rourke.

Not Nolan.

The laboratory Katherine herself had once directed.

She went cold.

Vance saw it.

“What?”

Katherine whispered one name.

“Dr. Evelyn Mercer.”

Hale frowned.

“Mercer?”

Katherine closed her eyes.

“My mother.”

No one spoke.

Officially, Evelyn Mercer had d/i/e/d eighteen months earlier.

A highway accident.

Closed casket.

Katherine had identified her through dental records because the body had been too badly damaged.

She had buried her.

She had stood alone beside the grave.

Vance stared at her.

“Katherine…”

She was already moving toward the captured agent.

“Where is she?”

His smile vanished.

Katherine grabbed his jacket.

“Where is my mother?”
