MY DAUGHTER ASKED ME TO DIVORCE HER FATHER AFTER ONE DINNER FINALLY BROKE OUR FAMILY APART
Chapter 1 / 4

Chapter 1

PART 1 - THE DINNER THAT FINALLY TAUGHT ME WE WERE NEVER HIS FAMILY

944 words

“I want a divorce.”

Zachary froze with his fork halfway to his mouth and stared at me as if I had suddenly started speaking another language.

“What did you say?”

I held Chloe, our four-year-old daughter, a little tighter.

“I said I want to divorce you.”

Tristan, Zachary’s son from his first marriage, immediately smiled.

“Then divorce her, Dad! Charlotte can leave, and you can get back together with my mom.”

Zachary shot him a sharp look.

“Eat and stop talking.”

But Tristan, thirteen years old and carrying the confidence of someone who had never faced consequences, muttered:

“It would be better. If that mean woman leaves, Mom could come live here again.”

That mean woman.

I had been married to Zachary for five years, and Tristan had never once called me Mom. Most of the time, he didn’t even bother calling me Charlotte.

To him, I was “hey,” “her,” or, whenever he was angry, “that mean woman.”

Zachary never corrected him.

That night, everything had started over a chicken drumstick.

There was only one left

on the table. Tristan had said he was full and stopped eating. Chloe waited a few seconds before reaching for it.

She had barely taken one bite when Tristan suddenly reached for the serving chopsticks we used for some of the Asian dishes he liked and shouted:

“I still wanted that!”

Zachary looked up from his phone.

He didn’t even ask what had happened.

Instead, he opened WhatsApp and removed me from the family group chat.

It was the twenty-eighth time.

“You know Tristan loves chicken,” he said. “Since he isn’t your biological son, you should be even more careful not to make him feel pushed aside.”

I looked at him and barely recognized the man I had married.

“And what about Chloe?”

“She’s little. She needs to learn how to share with her brother.”

Chloe curled closer against me.

Zachary sighed impatiently.

“Stop making everything into a drama. Make

Chloe apologize to Tristan. If she behaves herself over the next few days, I’ll add you back to the group.”

Something inside me broke.

I remembered when Tristan was eight and used to wake up crying because he missed his mother. I would sit beside his bed until he fell asleep.

I remembered the night he had a dangerously high fever while Zachary was away on business. His biological mother said she couldn’t come. I left Chloe, who was still a baby at the time, with my neighbor and spent the entire night with Tristan in the emergency room.

And now I was the cruel stepmother.

“Zachary,” I asked, “have you ever truly considered me part of your family?”

He frowned.

“Are we doing this again?”

“His mother has been divorced from you for six years, and she has never been removed from the family group. You throw me out

every time she, Tristan, or your parents get upset with me. So tell me something. Who exactly is your wife?”

His expression changed.

“She is there because she’s Tristan’s mother. It’s just more convenient.”

I laughed, even though my eyes burned.

“Of course. Convenience gives her a permanent place. I have to earn mine again every single week.”

Chloe slipped out of my arms.

Before I could stop her, she ran toward the trash can.

“Dad, please don’t be mad at Mom. It was my fault. I’ll give the chicken back to Tristan.”

She put two fingers into her mouth.

“Chloe!”

I rushed over and grabbed her hands as she cried, trying to make herself throw up.

“No, sweetheart. You don’t have to give anything back. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Tristan laughed.

“See, Dad? She’s putting on a show just like Charlotte.”

I waited for Zachary to react.

For him to look at his four-year-old daughter trembling in front of him.

To hold her.

To ask if she was okay.

Instead, he said:

“That’s what happens when you spoil her too much. She’s already learned how to manipulate everyone.”

The last thread holding me to that house snapped.

I picked up Chloe and walked toward our bedroom.

“When you’re done calming her down,” Zachary shouted behind me, “come back out, clear the table, and help Tristan with his homework.”

I closed the door.

A few minutes later, I heard voices from Zachary’s phone through the speaker.

The family group chat.

Tristan was telling everyone his version of what had happened.

His grandmother said I was an ungrateful woman.

His grandfather insisted that I was behaving worse every day.

Then I heard his ex-wife.

“Don’t be too hard on Charlotte. I’m sure she has her reasons. Poor Tristan, though.”

Zachary’s mother replied:

“When you were living here, these things never happened.”

There was laughter.

Then Tristan asked:

“Mom, when are you coming back to live with Dad?”

Nobody corrected him.

I looked down at Chloe.

“Mom,” she whispered, “I’m sorry I ate the chicken.”

I wanted to cry.

“Never apologize for being hungry.”

She was quiet for a few seconds.

“Can we leave?”

“Yes.”

“Where are we going?”

I gently stroked her hair.

“Somewhere you can eat as many chicken drumsticks as you want.”

Chloe was silent again.

“Is Dad coming with us?”

“Do you want him to?”

She shook her head and buried her face against my chest.

“Dad only loves Tristan.”

That night, I made my decision.

I was done begging to be welcomed into a family that had spent five years proving I had never truly belonged there.

And Zachary still had no idea that, for the first time, after removing me from the family group chat...

I had no intention of ever coming back.
