HER EX WANTED TO SHAME HER BEFORE THE WHOLE ROOM UNTIL THE MAFIA BOSS STOOD UP AND MADE HER UNTOUCHABLE
Chapter 2 / 3

Chapter 2

PART 2 — THE MAFIA BOSS CLEARED HER $300,000 NIGHTMARE THEN OFFERED A CONTRACT THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING SHE HAD LEFT

1,102 words

Preston Caldwell looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.

Roman Costa still held Sadie’s hand.

“My fiancée,” Roman repeated.

The words moved through the ballroom like electricity.

Preston’s arrogance disappeared.

“I didn’t know,” he said quickly. “Sadie never said anything.”

“You wouldn’t know,” Roman replied. “You were too busy listening to yourself.”

Then Roman said something that made the surrounding guests lean closer.

“You owe her $300,000.”

Preston went pale.

“That’s a private legal matter.”

“No,” Roman said. “It is theft.”

Preston stepped backward.

Roman followed with one slow step.

“I dislike thieves Caldwell. Particularly thieves who steal from women and then humiliate them in public.”

Preston tried to explain the loan.

Roman did not care.

“Have the money wired to her account by nine tomorrow morning.”

“I don’t have that much liquid cash.”

Roman smiled.

“Sell your car.”

Preston said nothing.

“Sell your watch.”

Roman’s expression hardened.

“Sell anything you need to sell.”

Preston nodded.

Roman dismissed him

as though the conversation were over.

Then he looked at Sadie.

“We’re leaving.”

Outside, freezing Chicago rain hammered the pavement.

A black Maybach waited at the curb.

Sadie stopped beside the open rear door.

“I don’t understand,” she said. “Why did you do that?”

Roman studied her.

“Because you looked like you were about to break.”

Sadie almost laughed bitterly.

“You don’t know me.”

“No,” Roman said. “But I know enough.”

He told her to get inside.

The car sealed out the rain.

Roman poured whiskey into a crystal glass and handed it to her.

“Drink.”

Sadie took one burning swallow.

“Where are we going?”

“My penthouse.”

“I have work tomorrow.”

“No,” Roman said. “You don’t.”

She stared at him.

“You’re frighteningly confident for someone who just met me.”

Roman finally turned fully toward her.

“I did not just meet you Sadie.”

The words made her stomach tighten.

At his

penthouse, forty floors above Chicago, Roman finally explained.

Federal investigators were watching his empire.

He wanted to move his money into legitimate shipping, technology, and commercial real estate.

To convince investors that Roman Costa was no longer merely an underworld king, he needed something his reputation lacked.

Stability.

Respectability.

A wife.

Sadie laughed once.

“You want to marry me?”

“I want to hire you to marry me.”

Roman already knew everything about her.

Her education.

Her ruined credit.

Her eviction.

Even the nights she had slept in her car.

“You researched me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Roman crouched in front of her.

“Because Preston humiliated you and you still refused to cry.”

Sadie looked away.

“That doesn’t make me strong.”

“I disagree.”

Roman handed her a contract.

They would become publicly engaged immediately.

They would marry within six months.

The marriage would last exactly two years.

Sadie would live with him, attend

public events beside him, and help soften the image surrounding his legitimate businesses.

Her wardrobe and expenses would be covered.

At the end of two years, she would receive $5 million.

Sadie stared at the number.

“And Preston’s debt?”

“Tomorrow.”

“What happens behind closed doors?”

Roman understood exactly what she meant.

“I do not force women.”

His gaze remained steady.

“You will be safe with me.”

Sadie looked through the enormous windows at Chicago below.

If she refused, she would return to a collapsing life.

If she accepted, she would belong publicly to one of the most feared men in the city.

“Do you have a pen?”

The next morning, Sadie woke in Roman’s guest room and grabbed her cracked phone.

Her boss had fired her.

Then she saw the banking alert.

Available balance:

$300,142.16.

Sadie stared.

Preston had paid.

She immediately opened the loan portal.

She submitted the entire balance.

For the first time in fourteen months, the account read:

$0.

Sadie broke down crying.

Not because Roman had saved her.

Because the nightmare was finally over.

Later that morning, Roman found her at breakfast.

“The transfer cleared?”

“Yes.”

“I told you it would.”

He slid a tablet toward her.

Her schedule was filled with wardrobe fittings, styling, lunch at one of Chicago’s most exclusive restaurants, and a political fundraiser that evening.

Sadie looked up.

“You’re introducing me already?”

Roman leaned closer.

“Tonight nobody will see a woman who was sleeping in her car.”

His voice became colder.

“They will see Roman Costa’s fiancée.”

A styling team arrived within the hour.

They transformed Sadie without making her unrecognizable.

Her dark hair fell in smooth waves.

Her makeup sharpened her features.

Then they placed her inside a midnight-blue Alexander McQueen gown.

When Sadie looked into the mirror, she barely recognized herself.

She did not look broken.

She looked dangerous.

Roman entered wearing a black tuxedo.

For the first time since she met him, he stopped moving.

His gaze travelled over her slowly.

Then he produced a velvet box.

Inside was an enormous emerald-cut diamond.

“Give me your hand.”

Sadie obeyed.

Roman slid the ring onto her finger.

“When you wear this,” he said quietly, “you do not lower your eyes to anyone.”

Sadie looked at him in the mirror.

“If someone insults you?”

“I handle it.”

“If someone laughs?”

“They will learn better.”

Roman offered his arm.

Their first public appearance together was lunch at the Oak Room.

The room fell silent when Roman entered with Sadie.

People whispered.

Judges stared.

Bankers suddenly became extremely polite.

Roman covered Sadie’s hand with his across the table, intentionally displaying the diamond.

“They’re trying to understand what I mean,” Sadie whispered.

“No.”

Roman’s thumb moved across her ring.

“They are trying to understand what you mean.”

That evening, they arrived at the Vanguard Foundation Gala at Chicago’s Field Museum.

Paparazzi exploded into motion.

Roman placed one hand against Sadie’s lower back.

“Chin up,” he murmured.

She stepped onto the carpet.

Inside, senators, billionaires, developers, and political donors turned toward them.

Roman introduced her simply.

“My fiancée Sadie.”

Nobody asked her last name.

Nobody asked where she came from.

Nobody laughed.

For the first time, Sadie understood Roman’s lesson.

Power did not always need to shout.

Sometimes it simply entered the room and waited for everyone else to move.

Then Sadie saw Preston.

He stood beside his father, Arthur Caldwell.

Preston saw her diamond.

His champagne glass slipped from his fingers.

It shattered against the marble floor.

Roman leaned toward Sadie.

“Showtime.”

He began steering her directly toward the Caldwells.

Sadie’s heart hammered.

Yesterday, Preston had called her trash.

Tonight, he could barely look her in the eye.

And Sadie had no idea how far Roman intended to push him.
