Chapter 3 / 4

Chapter 3

PART 3 - THE SECRET CHILD AND THE NAME HIDDEN IN NORA’S PAST

897 words

That afternoon, Nora secretly hired a private investigator named Marcus Vale.

Within forty-eight hours, Marcus discovered what Nora could never have found alone.

Edgar had been meeting Heather for almost eighteen months.

Not secretly at first.

Carefully.

There was a difference.

They had met through a charity event where Heather volunteered. After that, Edgar began traveling frequently, claiming he was helping his company with administrative projects.

He wasn’t.

He was visiting Heather.

And then came the detail that changed everything.

Heather had a child.

A two-year-old boy.

The child’s name was Mason.

The father listed on the birth certificate was Edgar Finch.

Nora stared at the document.

A child.

A secret child.

While she was attending doctor appointments.

While she was taking medication.

While she cried alone after every negative pregnancy test.

Her husband had been building another family.

Marcus placed another file in front of her.

“There’s more.”

Nora opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Edgar.

Heather.

Kristina.

Together.

At a

restaurant.

Three people celebrating something.

“When was this?” Nora asked.

“Six months ago.”

“What were they celebrating?”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“They were discussing your insurance policy.”

Nora froze.

“How do you know?”

“Because Heather’s former roommate agreed to speak with me.”

He handed Nora a recording.

She pressed play.

Heather’s voice filled the room.

“Once Nora is gone, everything changes.”

Kristina answered.

“She has no idea how much money she’s sitting on.”

Edgar laughed.

“She trusts me completely.”

Nora stopped the recording.

She didn’t need to hear more.

She already knew.

But Marcus wasn’t finished.

“There’s one more thing.”

He placed another folder on the table.

“This came from Heather’s financial records.”

Nora opened it.

Inside was a series of payments.

Large payments.

The source account belonged to Edgar.

But the destination was not Heather.

It was another person.

A man named Vincent Perkinson.

Heather’s brother.

Nora looked confused.

“Why

would Edgar pay her brother?”

Marcus leaned forward.

“That’s the question.”

That evening, Nora returned home later than usual.

Edgar was waiting.

“You’ve been distant.”

“I’m busy.”

“With what?”

“My company.”

He smiled.

“You know, sometimes I worry you care more about that business than our marriage.”

The irony was almost unbearable.

Nora stared at him.

“Do you?”

“Do I what?”

“Worry about our marriage?”

Edgar looked away for half a second.

That half second told her everything.

Then he reached for her hand.

“I love you, Nora.”

She almost pulled away.

Almost.

Instead, she smiled.

“I love you too.”

The lie tasted bitter.

But it was necessary.

Because Nora had learned something important.

People like Edgar were dangerous when they believed they had won.

She needed him confident.

She needed him careless.

She needed him to reveal every secret.

Three days later, Nora announced that she had changed her

insurance arrangements.

She made sure Edgar heard.

“I met with my financial advisor,” she said during dinner.

Edgar immediately looked up.

“Oh?”

“Yes. The policy is being reviewed.”

Kristina stopped eating.

“What does that mean?”

“It means things might change.”

Edgar forced a laugh.

“Why would they change?”

“Because I realized I should protect my future differently.”

Silence filled the room.

Kristina recovered first.

“Sweetheart, you know Edgar is your husband.”

“Yes.”

“And your family.”

“Yes.”

“So why would you question him?”

Nora smiled.

“I’m not questioning anyone.”

But she watched their reactions.

Edgar’s hand tightened around his fork.

Kristina’s eyes moved toward him.

They were communicating without speaking.

That was enough.

That night, Nora placed a small recording device in the living room.

She waited.

Hours passed.

Then, at 1:30 in the morning, voices appeared.

Edgar.

Kristina.

Heather.

They had come into the house.

They thought Nora was asleep.

“You said the policy wouldn’t change,” Heather whispered.

Edgar sounded angry.

“I know what I said.”

“You promised me.”

“I will fix it.”

Kristina interrupted.

“She cannot be allowed to change anything.”

Nora listened from upstairs.

Then came a sentence that made her blood run cold.

Heather said:

“Maybe the snake was not the best method.”

Edgar answered:

“No. The snake was supposed to be the beginning.”

Nora covered her mouth.

The beginning?

Not the end.

The beginning.

Kristina spoke quietly.

“We need to move faster.”

“Why?” Edgar asked.

“Because Vincent found something.”

A pause.

Then Edgar said:

“What did he find?”

Kristina’s voice dropped.

“The truth about Nora’s birth.”

Nora stopped breathing.

Her birth?

What did Nora’s birth have to do with anything?

She pressed closer to the door.

Heather whispered:

“If she discovers who her real family is, everything changes.”

Edgar sounded terrified.

“Then we make sure she never finds out.”

Nora stepped back.

For ten years, she believed the biggest secret in her marriage was Edgar’s affair.

She was wrong.

There was another secret.

A secret about her own identity.

A secret her husband and mother-in-law had been willing to kill for.

The next morning, Nora opened the locked drawer in her father’s old desk, searching through documents she had never had a reason to examine.

At the bottom was a faded envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of her mother standing beside a man Nora had never seen before.

On the back were five words written in her mother’s handwriting:

“Your father is still alive.”

And beneath that was a name.

A name that changed everything.
